Close Range AR500?
« on: September 04, 2011, 01:16:13 AM »
Perhaps more of a question for MGM, I picked up a few plates of AR500 from a group buy that were plasma cut, so I realize that wear and tear around the edges is normal. Out at the range the other day using 45gr Sinterfire frangibles at 25-50yd I've noticed it dings the plate just slightly, maybe 1/32nd or 1/16th of an inch.

My question is...is this normal for even this grade of plate at close range?

My hot 10mm loads with plated bullets leave a very slight dimple on my MGM plates.

I’ve been reliability testing a new rifle and I’m shooting 175g full power FMJ .308 loads at a MGM BC-C Zone target at somewhere between 25 and 30 yards.
As of yesterday we have shot at this plate just under 600 rounds with this rifle and countless rounds of .223 and .45 ACP and I don’t notice any unusual dents or dings.

Let me know the next time you’re out this way and we can set your plate out next to one of my MGM targets and put some bullets on steel as a comparison to see if all 500 Brinell steel is created equal.

The few times I've shot my 1/2" MGM plates at close range with my SKS and AR it pitted it slightly, so I don't do that any more.

The MGM BC-C zone target is angled forward to reduce splashback and direct the energy of the rounds down to avoid pitting...
