Wolf Primer questions...
« on: August 25, 2011, 11:15:43 PM »
Anyone using wolf primers?
I have had great luck running CCI small rifle primers in my 223 loads and 9mm pistol loads. Even my glock is running the harder cup just fine.

My question for the group is; If I pick up some wolf small rifle magnum or the new small rifle 556 how stiff do you think the cup would be? I'm guessing they would be similar to the CCI SR's.
Any thoughts?
I would like to keep using the same primer for my rifle/pistol it's very convenient!

I've been running Wolf in .223 for the last few thousand rounds, not a single dud or FTF. I did however swap out the hammer spring for a Wolff Extra Power, the old hammer spring would fire .223 Remington, but not 5.56x45, even from the same manufacturer and brand.

If your rifle fires factory 5.56x45 no problem, then you'll also have no problem with the Wolf SRM primers. Good luck.

I've run a couple thou each of wolf SR & SP with zero duds.  I'll buy them again, especially at $18/k vs. $30-35/k at the time I bought them.  That was a Natchez group buy.  Wonder if anyone in town carrys them yet, especially somewhere near that price.

I heard they were suppose to be good, I read somewhere that right after they started selling them in the USA that G David Tubb bought like 500,000 of them, I guess he had good success with them.

The Wolf small rifle magnum primers will be similar to the CCI No.41 or 450’s, if you’re using the CCI 400’s currently you might want to experiment with the magnum primers for reliability in your pistols.
I have a partial card with 45 Wolf small rifle magnum primers I give you to try if it helps.

Funny you should bring this up... I just cracked open some Wolf LP primers for my 45.

HATE THEM!!!!!

In 200 rounds I had 6 FTGB - failure to go bang, when the hammer dropped. Of those 6 only 3 went bang after an attempted 2nd strike the other 3 didn't fire at all.

I've got probably close to 20k through this gun with, to this point, FTGB countable on 1 hand, running CCI primers.

Just my personal experience, may not reflect others experiences.

I've never used them, and don't plan to as long as CCI or Winchester primers are available.

I like to save money if I can, but I look at the primer as one of the key components.  If it don't work then everything else don't work either.

Its kind of like buying a $1,000 gun then trying to economize by buying the cheapest mags you can find.

If you're loading plinking ammo where a FTF is acceptable, knock yourself out.  But for competition, hunting, or anytime that you can't afford to have a dud... well, you decide for yourself.

Wolf primers are made by the same folks that made RWS primers back in the day. RWS made some very mild consistent primers. They were extremely popular with the LR and BR crowd.
Some people are like Slinkies - not really good for anything, but you can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Jmack, cci 400's is what I am currently using.

FTGB is not an option.
I had heard what RG was saying that they were a very consistent and even coveted primer by certain crowds. Evans, you know I want to shave the price any chance I can  but, FTGB won't cut it.
I guess I will stick with what works and not worry about it.

You want to save $10/1000?  Cut back on couple of those double-fat-mocha-gelato-grande-latte's per week and you'll soon be there!

Seriously, I try to be about as thrifty as the next person, but there are some areas I choose not to cut corners on.  Good gas, double-quilted toilet paper, and quality tobacco are just a few that come to mind...

On all the Wolf primers I have had issues with it has been from not seating them deep enough. The anvil on the Wolf primers sticks up .002” more the comparable CCI and takes considerably more force to seat them fully. I’ve also read that the Wolf primers have a slightly larger diameter and harder cups and this is the reason for the seating issues but the ones I’ve measured are the same diameter as CCI’s.
I hope this helps.

This might be the most important part. For range blasting where a quick tap and rack will fix anything, I'll use the Wolf. But for anything that may be used for competition or otherwise, CCI/Fed only.

I did notice that they took a little more umph to seat, and this could very well be the issue. BUT since I have loaded CCI almost exclusively for the last 10 years, and not had any issues, I think I'll just stick with what works, with me and my press and loading methods. ( I bought the wolf during the primer shortage a couple years ago when it was all that could be found and I was starting to run low)

That said, I may have some Wolf LP primers for sale here shortly . ;D
