1911 help.
« on: July 04, 2008, 08:24:09 AM »
I have never owned a 1911 before, and in the interest of not paying out the ass for something I dont know if I will like something has caught my eye.  That would be the Rock ISland Armory one.  I have researched all the lower end models and this is the one that I cant find negative reviews on.  Thats why I am goping local.  I know there has to be negative reviews.  I know they are made in the philipines but through history research that isnt so bad.  This would be my first one so I am not going to pay 1600 for it.  Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

1911 are great. The more you pay, the better the fit and finish. But the functionality is the same. Actually some of the higher end 1911 take longer to break in because of the tighter tolerances.

Most 1911 will feed ball ammo all day long without a hiccup, the biggest issue is the Magazine, buy quality mags and you won't regret it. Yeah Wilson's Mags are $30, but I have yet to have FTF from a Wilson mag that was not my fault. I have other mags that won't run reliably in any of my 1911's.

You can always trick out and update a basic 1911, or have it smithed and tweaked down the road. I've heard good reports about the RIA guns, good gun, good price.

After you own a 1911 and shoot it a while, you'll see why you will want a $2000, or you'll end up investing that much into your first one. Either way, you can't go wrong.

IMHO, you can not go wrong with a RIA.  I have three (selling one of them if you are interested) and I love them!!  I actually sold my Springfield to get another one (kind of funny sold RIA, bought Springfield, sold Springfield and now have another RIA) cause I love em.  I have owned Les Bauer (sp?), Springfield, Colt, Norinco, Kimber, Taraus, and RIA.  Except for the Kimber, I would recommend the RIA over them all, but that is IMHO.  Wilson combat drop in stuff works great (no gunsmithing) and the only thing I have heard recommended is to replace all springs first.

I have a couple of 1911's.  Great pistols.  Next one will probably be an STI 2011.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.
