RDS on a handgun
« on: August 21, 2011, 07:45:10 AM »
Plenty of topics out there on the various forum boards about mounting a RDS on a handgun, the pros, the cons, etc.  Some noteable (both famous and infamous) people have been touting their virtues etc and so forth siting competition gunners already using them, the RDS on a rifle blah blah blah.

My curiousity has been piqued but sadly I am a poor ass bastard to see what the new flavor of kool aid tastes like not to mention having my Glock slide milled for a RDS makes me cringe, I was curious if anyone has taken the plunge and tried it out (mainly getting your slide milled to accept something like a RMR).  Would definitely like to try it out and make my own uneducated opinion on if its the next best thing since sliced bread or if it's just a fad for those that have too much money that would be better spent on quality training and ammo.
Due to the actions of the offender...

well, first of all the kids are calling them RMR's these days...
I can't hang with the boys in open class, so I haven't tried one yet.
I was shooting with an ADA Co. dept. yesterday and we were talking about them.
He wanted them for duty carry but felt they hadn't been tested enough yet.
Also for duty carry it would need to be on all the time or not reqire batteries.
They call me "Double J"

The pistol I have a red dot on is more for plinking. My eyesight has trouble with iron sights on many pistols and if I can see the front sight I can't see the target. The High Standard didn't need any milling as I found a grip replacement panel with a scope mount that works fine.

But I know that's not an option on Glocks and a variety of other polymer frames. There is an adapter for some pistols with an under-barrel rail that goes around the slide and provides a sight base though.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

I'm also a little confused on the second part, but good timing on this thread.

I have been shopping for one, assuming RDS is Red Dot Sight, for the Glock. With a suppressor on, I would need raised sights anyway. After a bit of research I'm looking at a Burris Fastfire and a Glock adapter that replaces the rear sight. You can get both for $200 from various suppliers online.

I think the slide mounted RMR sights would be pretty sweet.
The problem with the frame mounts is that is puts the sight super high, you can't run irons sights in conjunction with them, and you'd need a different holster.  After shooting some open guns its "weird" to me to have the sight that high off the gun.

My Burris Fastfire II came in today. I realized that I can't use it with any of my holsters, my EDC holster would work if I shaved off a bit of the top.

There is only one solution. Buy another Glock to use for EDC.  ;D

The problem with a slide mounted dot is that you loose the dot every time you fire. A frame mounted let's you keep the dot in your sight picture.

I know its a mako product but saw this on ar15.com earlier today

http://www.themakogroup.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=USM

It does look like both the grip panel mount and mako's mount could possibly affect clean case ejection
