k12 online
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:15:41 PM »
Hi all
I was wondering if anyone has used the k12 on line public schooling for any of their children?  I just registered my son in this and would like some feedback from anyone who has heard about it or used it.  The reason we are trying the on line school is because the schools in Mountain Home are not meeting Standards and I want to make sure my child is getting the best education that he can... so please let me know any opinions, facts or info you have... we are registered through the Idaho Virtual Academy in Meridian. The Education plan they use is K12 My son will be going into the 7th grade..

Thanks
I like moving targets........RUN!!!!!!!!!

so how much does it cost?

We have home schooled and spend about $600 a year per child  we have spent as much as $1000, when we used Bob Jones DVD's for a couple years.

It's free because it is considered a public school even though you are at home.  They will even loan a computer and printer if you don't have one, and you give it back when done with it.  We signed up our son for Idaho Virtual Academy this year but might have to wait for Spring to start him on it.  I have heard nothing but good things about it from those who have used it and from friends who know people who use it.

This will be my son's third year in IDVA.  My daughter graduated from the high school this last year and will be starting college. She attended three semesters. We have been very pleased.  My daughter, who's a bit of a brain, was challenged by the curriculum a good part of the time.  The only improvements I would like to see is their foreign language modules are a little "hokey" but they get the job done.  The other improvement would be communication from the main office can be a little slow.  BUT the teachers are all great about communicating with students and parents.

LIke someone else said it is free and they provide all of the materials you need this includes books' work books, microscopes, art supplies etc... Also if you are a low income family and qualify they will even give you $30 a month towards your internet bill.

And just to round out the Virtual option lineup, my wife and I enrolled our daughter in Connections Academy, also a free online school, for 7th grade this year.  We're looking forward to seeing how well it will work out for us.
