Help understanding 922r - want to add some parts to my FAL
« on: August 13, 2011, 08:37:08 AM »
Is it illegal to take a 922r weapon and put the original parts back on? I have an Imbel FAL built on a stg58 kit that I would like to put the flash hider and original stock back on.  The flash hider was cut off by CAI and the US stock does not have a swivel, I would like to put an original sling on it. I saw my exact rifle for sale online and it had the complete stg58 kit, not sure what the 922r parts were on it.

I don't have the answer, but I bet you could find it at FAL Files

My understanding is that unless its imported as a curio and relic firearm, reducing the US made part count on it makes it not 922r compliant any more, and therefore illegal.  If its imported as a curio and relic firearm, then you can return it to its original state (ie NO US made parts) and you would be ok.
But I'm not an attorney......

You need to keep the imported parts count down to 10 or less.  From memory here are the parts that count. You can mix and match parts just as long as you have no more than 10 imported parts on the rifle.  So if you replace say the floor plates and followers in your imported magazines, you just cut the total imported parts by 2.  Since the FAL has no trunion you can eliminate that part from the list.  Of course you need to know what parts in your rifle are US made so you know where you are at this point.

I may have missed one or two, to go FALfiles.com and you can get an accurate list.

Barrel
Trunion
Receiver
Stock
Handguard
Gas Piston
Muzzle attachment (flash hider, muzzle brake, etc)
Magazine body
Magazine floor plate
Magazine follower
Hammer
Trigger
Sear
