Found a few out on the range the other day.

Sorry the picture is a little blurry.

Not a sabot, has a full jacket.

Headstamp is "HP .223 5.56"

Comes back to "Hirtenberger Patronen-, Zündhütchen-und Metallwarenfabrik A.-G., Hirtenberg, Niederdonau, Austria"

Good luck pronouncing it. That's all I could find.

I think I have a case of of those in the shed. As I recall, they might be frangible rounds.  I'll go out and check in the morning.

It could be a Simunition CQT training round.

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice, for I am a hunter,
And I must have my freedom.

The simunition rounds I have seen usually have a solid plastic tip, no variation in size at all like this one does,.

Got any better pics?

Sure I can snap a few. Cam is in the shop right now for a photoshoot, but in a bit.

Looks kinda like this, right?:

Someone was selling one on this site:
https://www.specialistauctions.com/auctiondetails.php?id=1212051
According to the seller, it's one of these: "223/5.56 short range Lead free cartridge. Headstamp HP 223/5.56. Copper/plastic head."

Sounds like a practice type round that for when you don't want overpenetration or misses flying very far. Could it be a practice round for the Guardsmen out in the Orchard Training Area (is that the range where you found it?) Maybe something for use inside a structure?

OK, stole this from another forum (calguns), who in turn stole it from Janes:

Frangible short-range ball: 1.8g bullet (that's 28grains) consists of approximately 80% copper and 20% plastic; MV 1,050 m/s; maximum range 750 m; effective range 180 m; specially designed to function in automatic weapons up to 600 rds/min; also available with primers free of heavy metal (lead, antimony, barium)

Sounds like the lead-free primers is what made it attractive for indoor use. No longer imported to US. Made a lot of NATO ammo, mostly pistol. Red tips were tracer ammo. Black tips were trainers.

May or may not be right.

And this is stolen from ar15.com:
Complete speculation, no authority, fifth hand info gathered from the net and BulletcatchR's personal experience (i.e. dispute all you want and take it FWIW):

It's HOT Hirtenberger ammo for indoor shooting/shoot houses. Will zip through targets, but will disintegrate when hitting steel targets and cement board (as opposed to drywall). It should cycle in all ARs. If it doesn't, it's because the system is OVER gassed. Velocity should be in the 3200 FPS range at the muzzle. Crimped & sealed primers.

Edit: It's "short range" because after 30 yards or so the wobble from the aft CG on the projectile makes it just a bit unstable.

as onemountain said training ammo.  it's really no different than the swedish 9mm training ammo that had a BB inside a plastic cap.  really hot and they smell like burning weling rod when shot.
