Steel Targets
« on: July 07, 2011, 03:13:38 PM »
The idea I have in my head is to find a reasonably priced (say $100 or less) steel target to hang from a welded steel frame. I've been looking on-line at all the available options, and there's many! Any likes, dislikes or recommendations would be appreciated. What's everyone shooting at these days?

MGM Targets in Nampa is the only choice, if you live in the Boise area. Without them, we would probably not have half the local shooting sports we do.

TG,
I was wanting something simple, 12-15 inch diameter circular/square and hangs via two strands of tow chain off of a stand welded from square stock. It would have to be able to stand up to a 300wby caliber.

I use something like this and the MGM 2X4 stand to take out to the desert and shoot.
With the 2X4 stand it's portable - cheap to replace - and lightweight.

And they are on sale for your price range.

The MGM 2x4 stand is definitely something I'm considering. A friend of mine on here (Egress81) has pretty much the same thing. The only draw back from this kind of stand, aside from the fragments destroying the stand is at distance it's sometimes hard to tell if you hit or not. Hence wanting to suspend the target via chains, which in theory if hit, the target would sway or swing afterwards.

The stand is made out of tubesteel but it holds a 2x4 which you use for the post. Frags won't destroy it. We've been using this system for years with no problem.
If you want to stay with the hanging target idea don't use chain. Use fire hose. It will take a lot of hits before it breaks and will still swing just as much if not more than the chain suspension set up.

tgibson beat me to it.
Don't use chain to hang your target or plan on bringing a bunch of quick links for repairs.
Two things to consider when using the MGM targets at 1000 yards +
1)   You will hear the ring after you make a hit on steel if all your buddies wait to woo hoo for a couple of seconds!
2)   It's easy to spot your shots on a clean white target so bring a quad and some white paint to repaint the targets in between shooters just in case they can’t wait to woo hoo. I use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer in the spray can, it covers and dries much faster than standard white paint.

Travis has a good idea using of fire hose, you might think of mud flaps off a semi or belting from a grain handling outfit.  Tread off a tire.     just .02........
MGM would be people to talk to........
Just heat a rod red hot and push it though belting or mud flaps the size of the hole you want....
Weld the bolts to the back of the AR 500 plate with 7018 or higher like 8018 preheat to 450 or so
enough to light a matchhead is perfect then weld.....
Another choice is cut the holes in the plate and use plow bolts grade 8 is best......
