Stuck case removal
« on: June 17, 2011, 01:06:55 PM »
First, you need a sizing die with a case stuck in it and rim ripped off. Fuck, I hate it when that happens! >:( Worse yet my pictures are too big so I have to do one pic per post. ::)

Second, you need the following items: #7 Drill, 1/4-20 Tap, a big ass washer to span the hole in your press that the die passes through and a stack of smaller washers to take up some of the threads on the 1/4-20 SHCS.

Drill out the primer pocket on the offending stuck case. Note, don't forget to pull the decapping spindle back out of the way and I am using my drill press but a hand drill works just as good.

Didn't get a good pic of the next step, but what you are going to do is thread the die and stuck case into your press part way. Next, screw your washer stack and 1/4-20 SHCS into your newly threaded hole making sure that the SHCS is all the way through the hole and engaged with all the available threads. Now, back your die out until the big ass washer is bearing against the press. At this point you can either turn the SHCS in with the appropriate Allen wrench or continue backing the die out of its hole using a wrench on the flats of the die body. I'm inherantly lazy and it's easier to get at the wrench flats so that's how I do it.

I just remove the decapping pin and holder, then take a real skinny punch and punch the case out.  I've only done pistol cases though, so maybe something about the rifle die would prevent this.

cant really pull the decapping pin with rifle because it gets stuck in the neck of the brass.

fj, check out windows power tools, there is a resizing app that once installed will let you resise pics by just right clicking on them. great tool for posting pics!

I just pull it back into the neck so it's out of the way of the drill and tap. I'll check out the tools you suggested.

For those of you who know me and know what a brass whore I am I want you to also know that I sacrificed a perfectly good piece of pick up .223 for this tutorial. :P That's right folks-real brass was harmed in the making of this production! :'( I crammed 3 pieces of unlubed brass in before this one stuck. ::) What are the odds of that, it never takes more than one when I'm not trying. :-[
