HELP!
«
on:

Hi All,
Looking for some help on clean a very old dutch oven. The led has heavy rust on the out side as well as the inside. After a few hours of sos pads and wire brush I'm not make a very big dent in cleaning the rust out of it.
Any ideas would be great help.

I owned a sandblaster a while back. It worked well on an old Chevy frame I was preparing for a friend. It didn't take long to discover that a large, very large auxiliary tank is ever sooo useful if I wanted to work without pausing every 2 minutes or so while the pressure recovered. Made the job easy, it got all the tough stuff. And there was plenty of tough stuff.

Drill or grinder attachment and Scotchbrite pads may work or Naval Jelly.

+1 on the drill/grinder method. I failed to take care of a DO a long time ago and the whole thing was a mess of rust. I tried the wire wheel chucked into a drill, and it took off the outer coat of rust. Then I chucked in a Scotchbrite wheel and it stripped the rest of it really well. A flapper wheel (sandpaper) on a 4" grinder might do well if it's really bad, but only as a last resort because you'll remove metal.
Let us know how it works out. Do you do much DO cooking, or are you just getting started?

Okay, I drop of the lid to a friend of mine and he sand blasted it with very low pressure. When he called me to pick it up there was no trace of rust on the lid. This morning I re-seasoned it and looks like new.
I did think about Naval jelly but, this will have food in and around it so I did not want the risk.
Scoob, I'm just getting started with DO. The oven is post WW1 that my wife's family had setting in storage. It has been well used and just cant see is setting collecting rust. Hope to have a dish done in it the next night or 2. It will see some use with all the race I work during the spring and summer every year.

drop it into a container of vinegar. just plain old white viegar with 5% acidity. leave it for a day or two, clean up with SOS or wire wheel, repeat if necessary.
