Options for wheel-adjustable LOP stock for Savage 10FCP
« on: June 16, 2011, 01:45:24 PM »
I have a great rifle (Savage 10FCP-HS in .308) with one drawback: the LOP is too short for prone work. When I'm shooting competitions, it's very common for shots to be taken from off-hand, sitting/kneeling, bench, AND prone depending upon range; so I want something with a wheel adjustment so I can adjust the LOP depending upon the position. Time between shot stages is short, so working with a spacer system is a no-go.

I've contacted HS Precision and, unfortunately, they don't offer their PST007 inletted for the Savage and were unable to let me know if it'd be an option in the future. I like the look of Manners' and McMillan's stocks, but don't see an option for a wheel adjustment for LOP. It doesn't look like it's possible to add an adjustable LOP to my existing HS Precision stock either.

Does anyone make such a beast? Could the existing HS Precision stock be cut and modified to accept an adjustable LOP and cheekpiece?  Just trying to figure out at this point whether it's even POSSIBLE to modify a synthetic stock like the HS.  Any suggestions?

Thanx!

Mike

Thanks J Mack!  I'd seen the Tubb 4-way, but wasn't sure whether the HS Precision stock could be modified to accept it given that it's synthetic.

I'm not familiar with the HS stock.
Is the butt hollow?
The tubbs will replace your recoil pad and I would think that the HS stock would use screws to secure the original pad.  If you can remove your recoil pad easily and take a look at how they fasten it I’m sure a solution can be found.
I’ve dealt with Bell and Carlson stocks that are foam filled and used nutserts epoxied in to attach recoil pads

With a little imagination and Devcon 10110 Plastic Steel Putty anything is possible.

I don't recall seeing screws in the HS recoil pad.  I had always assumed that it was epoxied in place.  I'll take a closer look at it when I get home tonight.

Use a Phillips screw driver and push around in the area you think the screws should be and if the screw driver sinks into the pad chances are good you will find a screw down there.
Most of the synthetic stocks I’ve taken apart use screws and CA glue and you will have to use a utility knife to separate the pad after you remove the screws.

Here is $.02 of keyboarding...

A.  Set it up for prone, with the scope forward for perfect eye relief proned out.  Then for all other positions 'lean' into the rifle.
B. before dumping $$ into a new stock, buy a $20 slip on recoil pad and slip it on for prone shooting, should increase your LOP an inch or so and test out your theory.  Take it off for the rest of the non prone shots.

Pretty sure current military applications don't change LOP for diffrent shots.  They set it up one way and shoot it all the same.
