Why you should clean your gun
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:56:53 PM »
Some people say, I never need to clean my gun, it runs great.

Others take it apart after every shot...well I'm somewhere in the I clean it when I feel like it, usually after a couple of matches, around 500 rounds or so. I almost always wipe them down after shooting, but don't usually tear them apart that often.

Yesterday after I got home from the Nampa match, I decided I should clean my STI, it had been 3 matches and 2 man on man events, probably around 750 to 900 rounds or so. I had also had a small issue on Saturday, the gun failed to go into battery a couple of times. I chalked it up to OAL a bit on the long side, as I push the .40 out a bit more than normal on this gun.

Upon tearing the gun down, I noticed that my ejector is all catwampus (technical term for broke) The front stud is just plain sheared off on it's rotating in freely, not sure if that was contributing to my failures, but never the less, had I not took the gun apart to clean it, I would have just shot it till the ejector fell out.

So, moral of the story, our gun is a tool and need some TLC. Take it apart and inspect, check the small things, give it some lube and enjoy some quality time with her.

I used to clean after every match, now I have been pushing it.
I've probably got 1200 through mine without a cleaning, and was having some failure to chamber today.
I was actually just thinking the same thing, I better dig in there and see if its just some grime or something broke!

That "Dream Cream" the Nealio gave me keeps my slide so slick and clean I don't feel like I need to clean it as often as I used to. 2-500 rnds is all I used to be able to get before things got "sticky" now, she just shoots and shoots and shoots!

Glad you found the extractor issue before it caused too much mischief.
Is that even a part you can get locally? Mid as well get a couple and have a spare for the parts box.
They call me "Double J"

FWIW, I'm one of those guys that cleans the guns everythime. "Take care of your guns and they will take care of you" Kind of thing. I have tried to clean them less often but for the job to be tougher due to more grime.

On the other hand after the sat Nampa match I tore down my gun and was looking at the recoil springs and just touches the collar on the end when "BOING" the recoil spring collor when shooting across the room. Now I can't figure out how to get the stupid thing back on the end of the larger spring.

Rugar P-95, anybody have an idea??
You will never ever ever again see me ever shooting a revolver ever in any match at anytime ever! No matter what!! Never, Ever at anytime for any reason ever! Any Questions?

I just ordered a custom Brazo's extractor for it to replace it. Figured I may as well put the good stuff in when replacing parts, the small stuffs not that expensive... may need some help fitting it, we'll see.

I've been using the Eno's Slide Glide and it does work well, and the more I shoot the better it gets, and not near as much leakage out the back of the gun after lubing.

No sure on putting a P-95 back together... anyone?

I called Buckhorn to se if my .22 Rugar wa done. It is except they gunsmith has to "Check it over". Hope to have it for tonights Steel hallenge at Nampa.

He said the gunsmith should be able to reinsert my collar on the spring.

Then I had a thought. If the collar is on the end of the spring how was it the springs are compressed on the guide rod??

Answer: Because the collar fits on the end of the guide rod and not the springs. DOH!!

Put the springs on the guide rod compressed them and poped the collar on the end and presto she fits back together.

So for me the moral of this story is cleaning your gun regularly will A) Bing to light any wear issues such as above with LuvMy45's and B) You will learn the working oif your gun one way or another.

After I switched to Lubricate from CLP I only clean every 1000+ rounds. Without the oil, there isn't anything for the dirt to stick to. Plus the dream cream keeps it smooth like butter the whole time.

OK before you guys start thinking anything weird.

I read that Lubriplate is a good lubrication for firearms and posted the information here.
http://www.boiseshooters.com/index.php/topic,8741.0.html

Then Nelio post about its use here:
http://www.boiseshooters.com/index.php/topic,9320.0.html

And here:
http://www.boiseshooters.com/index.php/topic,10998.0.html

So the recipe for Dream Cream did NOT come from J Mack
