Rookie mistake seating 30-06 bullet: fix it or toss it?
« on: June 11, 2011, 09:28:58 AM »
So I had the seating die screwed down too far on my first pull of the press leaving me with an OAL of 3.112.  All of my others are closer to 3.262, which seems to be pretty close to factory.  I have seen minimum OAL listed at 2.940, but I'm not sure if that's dependent on load, bullet, rifle, etc.  I assume that seating the bullet deeper than it should be can increase the pressure, so I'm wondering if it's safe to shoot.  If not, can it be fixed?

For reference, I'm using 57gr of H4831SC and 180gr Nosler Partitions.

Shoot it (I know the rifle  ::) ), or if you have a kinetic or other type bullet puller you can have a re-do.

Use a kinetic bullet puller and pull it out a little, then seat to the correct length.

Better for your peace of mind when you go to shoot it.

Got it, thanks. Sounds like either will work.  I'll pull/reseat it for consistency.

Depends on a few factors:

How close to the max loading you are
What volume does the powder charge take up in the case

If its a bit from max (10%?) and you have a 50% case volume, shoot em.
If you are at max and you are more like 90% case volume then I'd pull em.

This was my concern.  It was charged 5% below published max for the powder I was using, but based on what I know fj had been running through it, I also knew the rifle could handle more than that load.  Being close to max plus a deep-seated bullet would probably increase the overall pressure but I did not know by what percentage.  In the end, I pulled it and reseated it.
