Curious about Saiga shotgun
« on: June 01, 2011, 06:10:32 PM »
At lunch two buddies started blabbing about the Saiga shotgun. I know about this much (picture two fingers pressed close together), that it's the zombie world's AK47 of shotguns.

See one on zidaho. Yesterday it was $1000. Today it's $800. Gunbroker has a slew of them at much lower prices, but I presume there are different variants.

Objectively what does the Saiga shotgun have over other quick-firing 12g? Capacity? Other than the zombie onslaught what use does it hold/how is it marketed?

Thanks for being kind in my edumakation.

If you can get one that runs well, and that is not easy to do, they are awesome. Tube fed shotguns can not compete in the speed of reloading a well built and well running Saiga. The ATF or DOJ or some other three letter agency is considering banning the import of them and some people are trying to take advantage of that to make a profit on them. They go so far as to say they are already banned, but I don't think they are yet.

On Enos they are doing a review of a new magazine fed shotgun that is designed to mimic the AR-15 platform. It looks promising and will possibly be a better alternative to the Saiga. He says to expect a lot of them in stock in the US by the end of the summer.

one of the top shooters in the area runs a Saiga, after about 3000(dollars) they run great, before that I agree with Cfarmer, a novelty, run a win sx2,3, FNH or similar yes reloading is a TAD slower but proven bang for the buck. IMHO

I've wanted to get hold of a Saiga for a while, but now I'm waiting to check out the Kel-tec KSG. It won't have the rapid fire capability of the Saiga, but from the videos of the tests it does look like a zombie must have.

;D

AK variant imported from russia in the sporter configuration. once here they can be converted (see 922r)...to move trigger group to where it's supposed to be, add pistol grip and one of these and you have something

right now a bone stock gun runs $700ish.   1K and up for conversion, which is what you'll want

I had this built/converted as a trade for an ACOG.  this particular gun was originally a German bound import There was a batch of several hundred that went to Germany, but their laws changed and the guns ended up being re-shipped to RAAC but they never re-rollmarked them so it has the Geman for "red hunter" as is was originally a 22" barrel.  now cut to 18 and a red c-hair. riveted AK trigger guard and nothing but parkerizing for finish few other internal mods but I wanted it fairly plain, no folding stock/ magwell ect.

This is also my favorite weapon in Battlefield 2, for all you game nerds out there. They use a 12 round semi auto. i now kinda wish they had a 30 round full auto. Also, someone was selling a fully modded out version at the gun expo last month...

Damn, I take offense!!!! I don't have any amount of money in my sagia and it runs better than any shotty I have seen. It has never failed me yet. Yes it did take some tweeking to get it running good, but not much. it has run through many 3gun comps and patrol shoots. I am still not done with it though, working on getting better sights on it. ;D

I haven't shot my Saiga competitively yet but I've easily got > 1k rounds through it and I've had no problems with reliability at all. Only mods I've done are to put a pistol grip on it.

The only Saiga's I've heard of being "unreliable" are ones that guys took and screwed around with, so who's to say its not their fault.
I was planning on buying a Saiga myself, but I missed the pre-Obama window and when they went from $400 to $700 I decided I didn't want one that bad.
Either way they are badass.

I have a few of them, My sexy SBS and a couple others that are in original config that I picked up when they were south of 400.

I broke the gas block pin off, shooting some over powered 1970's loaded shells that I shouldn't have been, trigger springs cause jams, and i had to smooth up the chamber lips to get the big shells running smoothly.

It does take tweeking and maint but it is nice to have

There were a lot of them at iron man this year. I RO'd the golf cart stage that was a good stage for shotgun. Out of all the saiga's only one of them ran well. There were some bone stock and some $3,000 + guns and they all sucked the same. At least half of them turned into single shots.

This strikes me funny.  I think it all has to do with what day you see them run.  Last time I shot with him, he was trying to trade me ammo cause the stuff he had wouldn't run! LOL!!!

If you don't put a comp on them, or port them, or try to do a trigger job...they will all run just fine.  It's when you try to make them better that hey start to fail.  Like my old man told me when I started racing motocross...."High performance means high maintenence and low reliability."

They are easy as pie to make run...

The problem is lots of folks want to shoot dove loads out of a shotgun that was made for shooting buckshot. You can open the gas ports to get it to cycle, but that can lead to over gassing on the heavy HD Stuff.

I built my gun to just hardly cycle the crap wally world bulk box deformed trash ammo. It works great! Even after "Messing with it" all the way down to 8 inches. Thats 3.75 inches cut out of the gas system, and it still runs like a top.

not sure how the hell you could even get $3000 into a Saiga...   ???
