CCW In Oregon
« on: May 31, 2011, 02:37:46 PM »
I am shooting Iron Man and staying in Ontario for the event. Obviously, I will have a lot of guns with me. Does Oregon recognize an Idaho CCW or do I need to lock all the guns up in the back of the car? Do I have to lock the cases?

Oregon does not recognize the Idaho CCW.

Actually, they just passed Reciprocity with Idaho CWP's if I remember right.

Be careful. Snafu's link shows it passed the OR house. I didn't see any info regarding it passing the OR Senate. I also didn't see the date that it becomes law.

You can OC in Oregon. I just don't know how many at one time!  ;D

That's incorrect: it hasn't passed the Oregon Senate (yet).  Anyone who wishes to follow the bill's progress during this legislative session, bookmark this:

Looks like senate's talking about it in committee today.  Has anyone listened to the audio files of the previous meetings to get a vibe?  The audio archives are in f&#@!! .ram format and I refuse to install RealPlayer.

Most of whats been said in the previous meetings has been very positive. There seems to be at least 2 groups in opposition, but both come across as ignorant of the facts and high on emotion. Up to this point no one in any position to really challenge the law has come forward, as I see it, but today should be the real test.

Exactly what the others have said, it is not final yet.

I sure hope it passes because I spend a lot of time in OR and would feel much safer if i could CCW.

I did OC a couple of weeks back there in OR, but was not really near anyone as we were out in the middle of BFE doing some survey work.  I'd rather have had a scatter gun instead of the pistol but I was not about to try and lug something like that around.

Thast surprising about the Sheriff...Andy was always big on CW as long as it was legal when I worked there.  He had a lot of problems with illegals carrying without a license or citizenship but thats understandable.  Not sure if it has changed but we (as Deputies) were okay as long as the Mags/Ammo were seperated fromt the firearms and locked up.  Always recomended putting in an ammo box for example and locking it up.

I would think it depends on the sheriff......

If this thing doesn't pass I am going to contact one of the sheriff agencies we deal with and see if he will OK me.  I know there area several other guys here that are wanting their OR CCW as well, so maybe we will just make a party of it.

Just a heads up , but I have contacted Harney county which is the Burns area. I was told if I set up an appointment with the clerk and I have a valid CWP from Idaho they will gladly issue a non resident CWP to me.

I may be misinformed but I was under the impression that Oregon would only issue a CCW permit to nonresidents if they lived in another state and county that shared a physical border with Oregon i.e., Canyon County residents.  Things look positive for Oregon recognizing the Idaho CCW, I hope it passes.

Really?

That is good to know.  One of the guys at the office contacted Malhuer and they said since he doesn't live in a city or town bordering Oregon that they would not issue, even though he spends a significant amount of time in Oregon.

I am going to have to hit up the clerk at Harney to verify this...  If this is so, it is good news!

Here is the web/site for the Grant County Sheriff's Office Concealed Handgun License Application and Information. When I contacted them they asked my to call and make an appointment on any Wednesday and they would get the ball rolling.

The Sheriff from Grant County will travel here, that is how I received mine for Or.  For those that live in the area (Boise) I believe he would make another trip over if there is a place for him to set up and have about 50 to 70 people. He does have a video for use to watch and we all know the rest.

I will be there. I do travel between here and Washington quite a bit and would prefer not to have to pack my gun unloaded in a suit case.

There is no class, that is the great thing about it. It is a 30 minute video on line and you down load all the paper work and be ready for your mug shot and prints. For those that can prove you had training in the Military/LEO then you just need that info and the paper work  fill out.

Malhuer County sheriff only grants ccw to the County that are next to his County At least that was the case 6 months ago.

If there is interest then I'll start a poll to see if we can meet the Sheriffs numbers.  The 2 times the Sheriff has been here it has been on a Saturday, so that should help most everyone out.

If we meet the numbers he wants, then will need to find a place for him to set up and I'll post the links that those who want to get there ccw for Or can work on all that before he get here.

Put me down for 3.
When I took my class it was in a room that held over 100 people in the Sheriff's office on Barrister St. Does anyone have a contact there to see if we can use the room.

I would certainly be interested in this.

2 in this household would be interested, and I'll likely be able to gather several more, depending on the date.

Someone on another forum posted this link, saying it's the 30 min. video that's required:

Here's a link to the application:

OK no class - I was referring to a bunch of us getting together at the same time to get him here.

Maybe this could be scheduled through one of the local shops that have a class room/back room?
(Impact or Sawtac - Maybe if we could make it worth their time and trouble)

Something to look at maybe, at least ask about?

Just get on the phone and call the Grant Co or Umatilla Co Sheriff's office. They can clear up a lot of the misconceptions already posted in this thread. If you make these calls, I am confident that you will find an OR CHL easy to obtain.

If I am reading this right, the Oregon Senate took the language for approval of out of state CCW licences, out of HB 2792 and then passed the bill.

So basically, they re-wrote the bill from one of reciprocity to one of clarification of the rules that already say you can transport a firearm in its useless...er, unloaded and locked and/or inaccessible condition, such as in a locked glove box or trunk.  Added was the language for transport (in unloaded-locked-useless condition) on a motorcycle.  Then they re-iterated that you can't carry (in useful condition) on a motorcycle or atv.  Also, added verbiage that you can carry concealed on motorcycle/atv if you have an OR CCW, which I believe wasn't expressly stated before.  Do I have this right?

They'll keep most of their votes because they can say they tried, and they can keep the other votes because they can say they compromised.  There goes that they thing again.  I had high hopes, but not-too-deep-down I knew it would basically get killed in committee.  This is almost the same.
