So who here is goin' wolf huntin? And whatcha gonna use?
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:20:01 PM »
So apparently a rider on the the budget bill a little while back to avoid a government shutdown requires the US Fish and Wildlife Service to take wolves off the endangered species list in all states but Wyoming, returning wolf management to the states. I assume this means there'll be a wolf season this year! I also heard that the law had something in it to prevent that federal judge from relisting them from the bench. Not sure if that part's true; would be awesome if it is.

I didn't know of this rider until today; probably you guys knew about it.

Which leads me to my second title question: what would you use in a wolf hunt?
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy sights and thy trigger, they comfort me.

Thank goodness I'm too crazy to go insane

Small caliber ball ammo. Aim for the gut.

Agree, small caliber but I wouldn't want to try and find a wolf that's gut shot!

I don't think he plans on finding any (of the many) that are gut shot.

If I go it'll be an AR of some type.  Or an XP100 if I feel I can get close enough.

I'll probably chase em with my .223.  If I see one when hunting elk or deer, then an '06.

I got my deer and elk last year with my Bushmaster Varminter .223 so I think it'll work on a wolf.

Eh, I want fewer wolves, but that's no reason to be cruel about it.  The wolves aren't the villains; the politicians are.  And they're just big dogs.  Any centerfire will do, I'd expect.

Then you might want to aim for center of mass on the politicians!

According to the Statesman, F&G is going to get started as soon as possible on a cull in northern Idaho. With a statewide season starting this summer.

Idaho Statesman, May 5:
Quote
Page 1: Wolves are off the list and back into the crosshairs
Idaho regained management of the states 700 to 1,000 wolves, and officials say they'll soon start killing 50 of the predators from helicopters and small planes in a part of north central Idaho where elk have struggled. They hope to begin while there is still snow on the ground to make tracking easier and before elk begin having vulnerable calves. Hunting seasons around the state likely will start later in the summer.

To respond to the OP, like most others, whatever I have when I see one.  Likely .308 Win.

I'm excited about this, I'm thinking I'll buy a tag and just use my AR, or possibly my good old 30-30 I throw in when I'm camping, cause I'll have it with me.

I was planning on getting a tag and just taking one if I see one, when elk and deer hunting. 300 win mag, as I only plan on packing the one gun. I know we have a good size population up here. Saw one myself about 200 yards out past the barn, a couple months ago. If I ever see one near the house again, it is getting shot right away.

let's see,  what would I use on a wolf hunt?.....Hmmm, I'd like to nab me one of those lib-tard Peta fuks who lit the match at the fireworks stand, find a trail or watering hole, steak 'em down, shoot the fuk-tard in the leg, drop back about 200 yards with a .308 and let the screaming hippee call 'em in for me.  Maybe, the wolves will feel sorry for him and lick his wound 'til it all feels better.
