Questions about Rock River Arms LAR-15
« on: April 30, 2011, 08:19:14 AM »
I'm looking at a RRA Operator 2 LAR-15 for $1000.  It's on "special" right now on the manuf. website.  The "extras" that come installed would be about $1500 if I bought the upper and lower separately.
-16" mid-length gas
-RRA Operator CAR Stock
-RRA Half-Quad Free Float
-ERGO SureGrip
-RRA Two Stage Trigger

I have seen RRA mentioned a few times in the forum, but nothing recent.  What is the overall impression of RRA rifles?  And for those of you that own one, how has it treated you?  Has anyone seen a better deal out there right now?

I have a 16" RRA varmint that has been awesome.
never had any problems with it and very accurate as well .75" is average with good factory ammo , and reloads are .50" and under if I can hold still enough.

My other AR is built on a RRA lower and the gun has been flawless as well.

My 16 inch RRA has proven to be dependable and has stood up to some harsh working conditions.  I can put lead on a man size target out to 700 yards.  I did have a bolt failure and now carry a spare bolt in all my AR's.  I really like the RRA two stage match trigger.  There are better (and more expensive) triggers available, but the RRA suits my needs.  If you would like to try it out let me know.

I am not usually a fan of "off the rack" AR's.  However, occasionally, a deal comes along that can't be passed up.  If your RRA has all the options that you like, then the asking price is not ridiculous.

I have the exact rifle Minus the free float half quad.

The only problems have been self induced. The gun is a shooter... would prefer an 18" for my 3 gun needs that I do now, but I have had no issues or problems with this gun.

Wouldn't trade for anything else... except maybe a JP.  ;D

I found there is a slight bit of receiver rattle with RRA, but there is with any AR platform. If you use a combination of CMMG and RRA, there is no rattle at all, the two lock up rock solid.

But if its any indication to their quality, I once put 2000 rounds through an AR without cleaning and haven't had a single malfunction.

Careful with conclusions about an entire line of guns based on limited exposure... my RRA locks up tight, did from the start, still does today.

I'm sure there are some that don't, just like everyone's variations in making a gun.

Agreed, that statement is painting with a pretty broad brush. The fitment on all the RRAs I've used are all pretty solid as far as specs go, but some still have a bit of play. Not like they literally flop back and forth.

Beam and Coke nailed it for ya.
If its what your looking for in a rifle then it seems like a great deal.

I'm running mid length gas and a few minor extras to accommodate my 'Lefty' needs...
I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a RRA for that. (as long as your not going to strip it down and change parts. Better off just building from scratch.)

RRA's an outstanding platform, their fit and finish is up to par with anyone else.
They make a great product.
Honestly if I weren't a Colt Armorer, I'd go with RRA.

I have owned numerous AR's in numerous flavors and my personal opinion is that Rock River is probably the best built off the rack AR out there . They just seem to work well and have solid quality .

I tend to build my own AR's these days but I have 2 RRA lowers (one built and one factory) and one upper that has been customized and they seem to be working fine for me so long as I don't go shooting mucked up reloads out of them ;)

RRA AR's are great for the price. Ive had mine for about 10 years now and it has been a great rifle. The only issue I have had, occured while running Wolf ammo through my rifle. After about 9 mags, I had a stuck case that required a bit of work to get it removed. I would think that most rifles would have experienced the same thing. As far as fit, my upper and lower couldnt be tighter. Right now be prepared to wait at least 6 weeks for your rifle. Look around locally, you might find a local dealer with on on the way, or in stock.

Thanks for all of the response.  It matches everything else that I have heard about them.  Now the only challenge left is getting the go ahead from the wife....  Happy wife, happy life and all.  :)

That right there is the best reason to build your own.  You can sneak in a piece at a time.  Kind of like when Klinger mailed home a Jeep.

Yes but the mention of Klinger will put a smile on your face!

Back on topic, I was not impressed with any of my RRA AR’s and after many small issues including barrel issue that took them three months to rectify I sold them to fund a Noveske AR.
On a positive note they replaced the barrel that would not meet their accuracy guarantee with a new one that shot better.

Many of the Officers in my department run RRA rifles, due to a variety of factors. One is that RRA offers LE pricing, seconds they offer a good Off the Shelf product and third they offer many different platforms and options from the factory.
I currently use a RRA lower and their single stage trigger group, but that is where the RRA parts end.  I agree with everyone in here that if you plan on buying it and  running it, then RRA is a great option.  However if there is any thought in your head about swapping parts out and making it more exactly like what you want. Then you are way better of (price and parts wise) to build one.  There are a number of great quality parts out there that you can buy and install for about the same price.
I am sure that like most of us cost is an issue and all things considered RRA make a quality rifle that I believe you will be pleased with.
