Any local sources for ammo?
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:39:03 AM »
I see reports on arfcom of 500 of 5.56 for $200.  Is there anyplace around here with that kind of a deal?  Or must I resort to mail order?

I'll go back and check walmart again. The only ammo I saw them carrying was a 40-rd "value pack" for $23.

I think they are 50gr Soft Points (at least that's what I got in the value pack).  I bought a box once and they worked great on the varmints.

might be, but the last two VPs i bought (last year) were HPs.

i just saw an entire endcap at walmart in meridian with them a few weeks ago.

Cliff's has a lot of .223.  I don't remember, it might be by the case.

well let's see:

Sportsman's has PMC .223 for 9.99 for 20 rounds.  $9.99 x 10 boxes = $99.90 x 5.99 (Tax) = 105.89 per 200 rounds.
105.89 x 2.5 = $264.73 per 500 rounds.

Walmart has Federal 200 round VPs for 76.98 x 4.62 (Tax) = $81.60 per 200 rounds.
81.60 x 2.5 = $204 per 500 rounds

that's $60 per 500 rounds!  to those of us on a budget, that's quite a savings.  you could easily buy 600 rounds and still come in cheaper then 500 rounds from sportsman's.

Now, all this being said, i reload for all but 9mm, which i buy at walmart.  not all of us have the $1K plus to drop on reloading equipment to load bulk ammo quick and on the cheap.  i do all my loading on a single stage press and let me tell you, it takes FOREVER to load bulk plinking ammo.  Some people don't have that kind of time either.  so that leaves buying ammo.  and most of the $ will go to the ammo manufacturers anyway, and i'm sure most of it's not made in the states either.

when i can buy ammo at comparable prices from another local source, i will.

This.  The Chinese government has enough US currency.

Local ammo is hit and miss.  Everyone has .223 in stock on occasion.  Be prepared to buy it when and where you find it.  If you head home to think about it, the odds are it will be gone when you get back.
