LRTR Rifle
« on: April 21, 2011, 10:48:16 AM »

I’m thinking of putting together a rifle to use for LRTR but have some questions: what are people shooting? Caliber? Bolt or semi? Don’t know much about LRTR so any help would be great.

.308 is a great place to start (IMO)...with a 20MOA base, you should be able to get to 1000 yards easily.  I went bolt for mine:

Agreed. I started with a Remington 700 in .308.

A great source for local LRTR information; http://www.parmarng.org/index.php/lrtr

I agree that the .308 is a great cartridge with plenty of support and would make a good first LRTR.
I'm currently shooting a .260 REM bolt gun and starting to gather parts for a .338 Lapua.

Many choose the 308 to start with and move to 300 win generally then the bug bites
and they think of the 338 Edge or 338 lapua....
The bolt rifle seem to have most of the votes but some semi-autos hold sub groups.....

Wow...may have to wait awhile for this...the rifles I've been looking since asking the question need a little deeper pockets than mine...I'll have to keep my eyes open for a low budget used one...

I plan to take this if I manage to make it to the LRTR.

Savage 10FCP .308 W/Choate Stock
Mueller 4-14x40 scope.
America is at an awkward stage, it's too late to work within the system, and to early to shoot the bastards.

I plan to bring this when I go to the LRTR.  And no, it doesn't mean that I'll be hitting the target any better, it just means I'll look good when I miss it!!!   ;D

I know a lot of people out there like to shoot the .308's and 300 wins and this is probably going to start a sh*t storm, but why not choose a 7mm or even the 300 wby? Both have flatter trajectories and better down range ballistics past 500 yds than both the .308 and 300 win. Is it all just shooter preference and what you become accustomed to, or is there some advantage that I'm not up to speed on?
I have a Savage 12bvss(22-250) which I've so far stretched out to 700yds, I'm also working on getting my Accumark 300wby up and running with plans on getting it out to 1000yds, I'm just waiting on a new Vortex!

y'all need to get those sexy rifles out to Parma on May 15 for the next Practical Steel match.
65 rounds or so $10 to shoot it.

Max distance is 800ish

Thanks for the info, I have a 300 win I could shoot but it's my hunting rifle and I'm really not sure I want to take the beating from it all day, I'lll find something sooner or later.

I might take the .223 to Parma on the 15th and see what happens.

You can shoot whatever you want, just as long as it does't punch holes in the steel targets that get set out.

The 308 is the standard sniping round for military and LEO, so it gets used a lot, lot's of information on ballistics, ammo selection, BDC for scopes, windage determination, etc.. The 308 just has so much information on it and it's easy to find that it a very reasonable choice and can easily hit targets out to 1000 yards, and a wee bit farther if you want.

The 300 win is also an excellent choice and a few of the guys bring both a 308 and a Win Mag and switch rifles when they want to based on wind and distance.

The 7mm is a good choice as well, and we are seeing more and more sub 30 cal guns show up... it all boils down to knowing your rifle and ammo and what it can do.

The biggest reason for the 308 though, IMHO, is that after 100 rounds of shooting, the 308 doesn't tear you up and leave you crying like a little baby over how bad your shoulder hurts and how empty your wallet is

Bottome line: Know your equipment and what it can do... and shooting a practical precision match or a LRTR is a great way to learn that!

I call 300 Win, 300 fortheWin! Unfortunately, I can't even afford to pay attention (or shoot my .308), so I guess I'm going to have to wait until my lotto numbers come up which should be this week or next...

Luvmy45- that sounds like some logical reasoning, thanks for the input. Are there any shoots after May 15th? I would love to get in on this if possible!

These are monthly so far, at least while it is warm.
I think a June one is possible as long as they can get range time.
June and July are pretty booked at Parma.

Hopefully I can get a weekend off during one of your planed shoots. So far our schedules have lined up perfectly :'(
