Since Idaho ranks as the top state for retreat locations, I've done quite a bit of searching looking for some property in the Mountians.

can anyone give me some ideal locations in Idaho away from the city? its really tough finding 5-10+ acres that is timbered, with water access at a reasonable price without hitting the mid 6 figures on up.

is there any retreat communities around here?

Look further north.  Depressed areas like Kooskia on the Clearwater are a good bet as there seems to be more privately owned land in the mountains and the economy is poor there leading to lower prices.

Another option I've been considering (and I think it has been overlooked by many) is the possibility of purchasing a mining claim as a cheaper alternative (rather than having to spend 6 figures) to buy the ideal location. which some of us may not have the means.

The Pro's:
Mining Claims are Cheap.
Some claims can be bought next to or on a river. thus providing a good water supply.
The ability to bury supplies ahead of time for a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenario.
generating income from your mining claim (since gold will more than likely be the standard)
Free wild game for food. including fish. Growing crops.
Access to Free timber for housing, and fuel. or build a shelter in a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation.
The Ability to just drive up and park your RV, Tent, 5th wheel on property.
Knowing you have semi secure place you can go to in case SHTF or TEOTWAWKI.


Cons:
Unable to build a home on mining claim prior to a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation. since federal law prohibits this. and getting building permits to do so can be next to impossible.
The Public has the right to access or walk thru your claim, (Hike, Hunt, Camp, etc) but by law cannot take any minerals.

I think this can be an option for some of us on the cheap in case SHTF or TEOTWAWKI.

That's an interesting idea I haven't considered.  Don't you have to work the claim every year for a certain amount in order to retain the claim?

Yes, you have to do 100$ in improvements every year, and file the proper paperwork documentng the improvements. plus a yearly filing fee.

For me it's not about finding gold or trying to get rich, its a lot of work mining gold. for me the appeal is just having a location to hide out at if all hell breaks loose (SHTF or TEOTWAWKI)

But you have to do your due diligence, too many scammers out there these days. ebay has listings from time to time, and does criagslist.

I need to do some research and check somethings. but worth checking out.
Plus if SHTF, I doubt forest service or BLM will have the time to check and police public lands. and wouldnt give a crap what we do in a SHTF scenerio.

It is a good idea, and if you know where some gold is, that doesn't hurt either.

Gold can just about be found anywhere, problem is finding it in high enough concentrations that make it worth while.

In addition most of the claims sold on the cheap have already been worked over pretty good, and all the easily recoverable gold has been taken. so in order to make it profitable one must work harder and deeper.

in my early years between odd jobs or lack of employment, me and a friend often worked the placer gold below Friant dam outside of freesno, ca. with dismal to good results. but it paid the bills, and put cash in our pocket.

here is what I have left from my old days, using a sluice and pan. which I still have in storage. If i pick up one of these claims,  I'm definately gonna get a Dredge to make things easier. but mind you, it's a lot of back breaking work. and often times people give up.

It is back breaking work. And you can build on a claim - it just has to be portable. Like a trailerhouse? Or on skids? BTDT - too much work.

I'm with you IC,
Land ownership isn't gonna mean crap if and when TEOTWAWKI comes.  Squatters will camp where ever they can.  That retreat is gonna become a real popular place if you can't or are unwilling to defend it.  Better bet in my way of thinking is to research multiple sights and put in caches of seed and other supplies.

There is one big problem with heading in to the woods for SHTF or TEOTWAWKI.  Imagine opening day of deer season with three times as many people, none of them wearing hunter orange, most armed, and all of them in varying stages of desperation.  I seriously doubt the forests and wilderness areas will be quiet or secure.

Maybe but one thing is for certain, in a real TEOTWAWKI situation, smack in the middle of Boise is probably the last place you want to be. Unless you had some place underground to hide that had a ready supply of water (and food!). Maybe the SHTF in the woods, but you *know* it's going to happen in the city.

either way you look at it, it sounds like a no-win situation crap shoot.

You can head to the hills where water, food and shelter is readily available, if you're willing to put in the labor, or stay at home where you're limited supply of food and water will eventually run out, and you'll have to head to the hills to find/hunt food.

We've discussed using the Boise River before during BS sessions at pizza, etc. The problem is that if there is a real slide into anarchy inside the city, it might be damned dangerous making regular trips to the river for water. You'd have to be able to put together some kind of armed caravan, and even then you run the very real risk of leading bad guys back to your home.

The public lands of Idaho are a huge area and I don't think many at all will travel deep into the Frank Church, for instance.  The vast majority will stay home and await instructions from FEMA.

 Head to the mountains and find a spring or watering hole set up camp, living in town folks
will be going door to door.. have a supply and different meeting points to live in small groups
and look to s not to busy of a place...
 a small supply point at maybe 10 miles or so apart water, food and needed items.....TP....

I had looked at something like 20 acres in Oregon for 15k up in the higher mountain area.  Have to be careful how an area is zoned.  The one I was looking at was zoned agriculture, so the only permanent structure I could put on it would be something like an open floor barn.  But I would look for a bug out property in WA or OR before I'd look for one in ID!

what part of OR/WA were you looking in? The Wallawas (sp?) are beautiful, with lots of ponds everywhere if you're in the right area.

water on canals, different rivers with channels to setup
diversions to meet needs and lots of wind to go with.....
 Write our local rep and all in the state house call voice
