My solution to the 'steam' virus was to resolve never to buy another steam powered game.

I bought the damn game, I should not be required to get permission from Valve to play every fucking time.

There are hacks that will disable steam while still allowing you to play online.
Google is your friend on this.
But, as always, YMMV.

yeah but if valve or steam find out they will ban your account.
they think (wrongly) the hack is only for those who pirate the game.
America is at an awkward stage, it's too late to work within the system, and to early to shoot the bastards.

Haha this shit is hilarious. My has worked fine except for once or twice where I had to re-download it.  Plus Steam solves so many issues associated with game distribution, updates, and helps loosen the hold the publishers have on price.
Sorry you're having issues.

Steam - hot water turning to super heated air -  ;D
"It is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks.... It doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time I am not against violence in self-defence. I don't call it violence when it's self-defence. I call it intelligence." Malcolm X
