Sorry but I always used a mill to cut the slot for the wheels and used a full length axle .
I do have a hot pink flower power car that has never finished worse than second

I built it when I worked for a machine shop and had millions of dollars worth of equipment at my disposal . We had the alignment within .0003 inches front to back . We built custom axles , had them polished , trued the tires and it weighed exactly as heavy as it could be . We pulled a few other tricks out of the bag and then let my 5 year old daughter plaster stickers on it and decoupage it .
