Subsonic 308 loads
« on: April 09, 2011, 10:37:47 PM »
So I'm fooling around with some 308 subsonic loads.  I just got my stamp back for my AAC 762 SD and decided to see what the subs sounded like.  They turn my Rock River 308 into a single shot, but it's whisper quiet.

I'm using some old 180gr round nose bullets with IMR Trailboss for now.  I may go to 170gr round nose depending on how these group.

My barrel is a 1-10 twist and I don't think I'd use 180gr bullets in anything slower.

I started at 9.5gr of trailboss and get very minimal keyholeing at 50 yards.

I've got some more loaded up at 10.2gr - 10.5gr that I'm going to try tomorrow.

So far the can and subsonics have been a lot of fun.  Almost no recoil, and it sounds like an airgun.  You hear the bullet hitting the target more than anything else.

I've tried some with 7.0 of Bullseye and 168SMKs, worked pretty well. I just tap the base of the round before chambering to settle the powder near the primer.

I've used trailboss to make 223 subs. IMO it's probably one of the safer powders for subs since it has a huge grain size. I think I paid around 12 for half a pound. Probably will never use it all since without a suppresor subs are more of a novelty for me. On the plus side sub brass is super easy to size.

Reminds me I saw some where a while back where a guy drilled a new gas port just forward of the chamber and it would cycle subs. I can't seem to find it again if anyone has the link...
