Accuracy with plated 9mm bullets
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:14:53 PM »
My latest purchase of plated 9mm bullets from the Hunting Shack are not working in my stock Glock barrel. Some where around 100 rounds after cleaning with a copper solvent I have a bunch of tumbling bullets. My Lonewolf barrel shoots them fine. The previous order of Hunting shack 9mm bullets shot fine in my stock barrel.

Here is what I have been loading:
Hunting Shack 9mm 124gr plated Round Nose
4.2 grains Titegroup
1.135 overall length
Federal primers
mixed brass

So I am thinking before I order some of the Xtreme's in the next group buy, what kind of Accuracy are you guys getting with the 9mm plated bullets? Anybody had trouble using a Glock barrel?

It could be your crimp.

in both my 9mm, xd subcompact and a full size taurus 24/7 ive had pretty good accuracy with the xtreme plated bullets. ive loaded and shot the .40 xtreme plated out of a glock and they shot pretty well.

it could just be the barrel doesnt like the load

Just starting on the Xtreme 9mm loads... minute of steel on what I'm shooting so far, plated .45 does fine with no issues for me.

However, I don't own a Glock so YMMV.

they've been great for me.
I've shot about 2k of the extreme plated.
I have a couple hundred loaded up, your welcome to grab some and test them in your barrels before the group buy.

My load is,
115 RN
5.4 Unique
OAL 1.145
that gets me right around 130 PF.
Drop me a PM and I'll give ya my #.
Can meet up and make a hand off.
They call me "Double J"

2nd on the crimp being the problem.  The 9's seem to be sensitive to crimp, with too much or too little causing tumbling, especially in a Glock oversize chamber.  I shoot plated's out of Glocks all the time; just have to check the crimp occasionally.  Especially after loading FMJ's and then switching to plateds.

I pulled one of the new Hunting shack bullets and one of the old Hunting shack bullets. Everything I could come up with to compare the two resulted in minute differences. The new bullets had a little more of a champfer on the bullet base. The most interesting difference was that the old bullet seemed to be softer. I tested that by crushing the bullets together in a vise.

Next I'll try some with more crimp, less crimp, slower powder, and some different lengths. And thanks guys for mentioning the crimp, it looks good to me so I hadn't really considered it. But it is defenately easy enough to test.

Rob,
I also have polygonal barrels in my Tanfoglios and the Xtreme's I shoot are wicked accurate.  I've never seen any copper buildup in any of my barrels from any type of plated bullet.  I did have to back my charge down a tad when I switched from Berry's (which are very soft) to the Xtremes.  I don't know if that was due to the hardness, the diameter, plating, or what but its something to note.

Glock asks for 15-18 thousands of copper plating on bullets shot in their pistol....
As to what we get is another question......

I've been meaning to cut an extreme, Berry's, and Raineer in 1/2 to see what kind of plating they have.  I should get on that...

Did some shooting today!

For the aftermarket Lonewolf barrel more crimp looks the most promising. Off hand at 15 yards for 10 shots resulted in;
4.5" for normal crimp,
4" for less crimp, and
2.5" for more crimp.
So next time I will experiment with varying the crimp even more. Also those loads were loaded to 1.155".

The stock Glock barrel seems less sensitive to ammo differences, well that is as long as it is clean. I had a rested 5 shot group at 25 yards that measured 2.75". And that was my normal load but lengthened to 1.155". The best the Lone wolf Barrel did at 25 yards was 6.25".

I am also going to reduce the charge of Titegroup. I went form an overall length of 1.135" to 1.155" and am still seeing an occasional pierced primer.

And KTMNealio let me know if you have a good method for measuring the plating thickness. The best I came up with was eyeballing them and I couldn't tell a difference in the old versus new Hunting Shack bullets.
