Where are some good camping locations?
« on: March 24, 2011, 10:25:20 AM »
Bought a trailer this fall and I am looking for some good places to camp.  Trailer is self-sufficient, so I don't need a campsite with hookups.  More interested in boondocking off the grid.  Anywhere that is close and/or fairly easy to get to.

Thanks for any input.

Matt

Nice rig!

Depends on what you like to do out there, and what you consider 'close'.

Do you like to fish, hike, ride atvs or motorbikes, ride mountain bikes, pan for gold, soak in hot springs, or just sit around camp and read?  Do you like lakes, or do you like to stay away from the crowds?

If you like the mountains and forest, here are a couple of examples:
Go north on highway 21 and turn right at the Spring Shores/Arrowrock turn-off.  Head up the Middlefork (Boise River) road past the Arrowrock Dam and reservoir, and there are several nice places to camp.  There are lots of hotsprings too.  The road is usually washboard except for the two times a year that they run a grader down it.  Take it slow, there's bound to be one or two ID10t's that seem to think they have to do 50+mph in the switchbacks.

North of Idaho City, go up over the pass (More's Creek Summit) and you'll be in heaven for tons camping spots, with plenty near streams.

Going the other direction, head south out of Homedale towards Succor Creek.  It's a beautiful canyon of rock formations, and plenty of exploring.

A whole pile of us will be camping at Leslie Gulch (southern end of Owyhee Reservoir, another beautiful canyon) weekend after next.  Some of us ride atvs, others may fish (will need an Oregon license), and some just hike around.  Best way to LGulch is is south on hwy 95 to either McBride Creek road or the south end of Succor Creek Rd, depending on weather.
 This is where we'll be:

You'd have to retire right now to try and discover all of the cool places to camp in Idaho, and you probably still won't be able to cover a fraction of it all.  We're still gonna to try anyway!   ;D  Maybe we'll see ya out there.

Oh yeah, here's our rig:

When I saw the picture of the trailer I had to cross off all the places I was thinking of when I saw the thread title. The trailer would not make it.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

i love the crouch loman area, love fishing up there granted i never have caught alot but its great country and my little car gets up there just fine so a trailer should be np. the stanely area is great too. lots of camping spots in both areas. the other area ive gone to alot is wallowa lake in oregon, its a great place in the early spring late fall when most people are not camping. My favorite camping trip was there in the early winter.

There's that part of me that says what we do isn't really camping... it's rv-ing.  I don't get worked-up over semantics though.

Another favorite is the Ross Forks area of the Sawtooths, by way of Soldier Mountain Road out of Fairfield... past the Big Smoky guard station.  Mountains, streams, high lakes to hike to.  The fishing is ok in the streams, but really good in the lakes.  There are still remnants of mines to explore as well.

Wow - guess I won't put a pic up of my little 15' circa 1973 trailer that I paid 600 for last Summer... wouldn't want you guys to be jealous, lol.

I figure anyplace is a good place to camp in Idaho.  Why?  Because you are not home doing "honey do's"!

My favorite places are near Warm Lake (near Cascade) and Bull Trout Lake (past Grandjean on hwy 21).  Another spot that I love for solitude is the campground near the Thorne Creek Butte lookout - only 4 spots, but I've never seen more than one person there, besides myself.
