Grain mill
« on: March 16, 2011, 04:10:23 PM »
I am going to buy a grain mill, but, know next to nothing about them.
After a lot of research, I believe the Country Living mill is the least expensive mill, that is the highest quality.
There are less expensive ones out there, but they use stones for grinding. Whereas the Country living uses steel plates.
From what I have read, the stones will wear away and cause your teeth to do the same :o And my teeth are not easily replaceable. ;D
The lowest price I can find for the Country is 395 with shipping.

Does anyone have experience with mills, is Country the best one to get, am I overly worried about the stone grinding problem, is there a lower price out there for these things? ? ??? ? ??? ?

Thanks for any help

When I was a kid my Dad lived off the grid on 40 acres . They used a stone wheeled mill for making all the flour for Bread and anything else they might need flour for . You could adjust the coarseness of the grind with a tension screw in the middle of the stones . The steel ones might be better but they used stones for grinding wheat for thousands of years before a steel grinding wheel showed up .

e had a country living one, sold it and now have Grain Maker    http://www.grainmaker.com/   It is better, works better too...   Biggest thing I like is it can do the grains with lots of oil....can't do that with Country Living....

Check out the video and specs and comparision to Country living....It is higher quality!!!

What about the Wonder Junior Grain Mill? It can use a burr or a stone. I think the stone is a nice option to have. It's true they have been using stone mills for thousands of years. I doubt it would cause an issue with your teeth.

I looked at the Wonder Junior and the output is not as great as the other ones mentioned.
Yes people have used stone mills for thousands of years, and have you seen the displays in museums of Indian teeth. LOL
I know teeth deterioration  has to do with what type of stone is used. LOL.

Man, these things are expensive.
Has anyone looked into constructing a mill using the auger and stones( or steel ) from a commercial unit, and the rest be built from scratch?
Thanks to everyone who replied.

You get the auger and stones and I'll build us the units!

I ended up buying a GrainMaker “ http://www.grainmaker.com/ “ and I’m in the processes of mounting the 12 Volt DC motor and inverter. I’ll try to take some pictures later but this looks like it will be a pretty slick portable setup.

If anyone is interested I have another Scott Motors 4BB-1367 ½ HP 12VDC motor and gear box that I bought for another project and never used and I would be willing to give a Boise Shooter member the gear box and plans for mounting the GrainMaker if they pay for the motor.

This is a bit less than I paid but I would sell it for this amount: http://www.greatlakesallied.com/store/product.php?productid=101102&cat=268&page=1

Jeff please don’t move this to the swap meet and just remove this post if it’s not appropriate.
I’m more interested helping a BS member with their prep than I am selling a motor.

We bought the wonder Jr., haven't actually tried it out yet.

I know one of the benefits of steel burrs over stone is that you can make nut butter out of almonds, peanuts, etc. with the steel burrs.
