Rock Chuck
« on: February 18, 2011, 07:45:59 PM »
Hey couple buddies of mine (and myself) are looking at doing the Rockchuck Shoot For Hope in Haggerman this year...but other than BLM hunting I have never "hunted" rock chucks.  Do they require anything other than general hunting license and can you "legally" hunt them with anything?  Like a .22, .223, shotgun or whatever.  Any info is appreciated, I looked at Idaho Fish and Game and dont see anything specific for them but just want to make sure. ;D

The main rifle/pistol I use for Rock Chuck shooting is the one I have in my hands. ;D

I prefer the 22-250 for longer shots.  I also shoot my AR as well, but you don't get the acrobatics that you get with a 22-250 or 308.  But then again, with the 22-250 or 308, you can't keep 'em in your sight picture either, which makes it harder to watch the fun, or spot your miss.

They're pretty skittish and high tail it to their hole if you get very close, so you'll need a good set of bino's or a spotting scope.  We usually run a two man team, one spotting, one shooting.  Switch off after each kill or take the shot if the spotter can't get the shooter on the target.  They blend in with the rocks and grass pretty well, so good communication and a good understanding of what you call "that white thing on the right" is.  He could be looking at the whiteish brown thing on the left.

Rock chucks can be hunted from a 22 rifle to shotgun to be hunted you need a hunting license...
The owner of the land can shoot them on his property without a hunting license but thats it
if you shoot on public land you need a hunting license.........

I've go a bunch that I have been using a Beeman 20cal Pellet rifle to keep them in check with.
I will stop shooting this bunch after I get 15 or so to keep a breeding population.
I get cammoed out, most shots are 35-45yds all head shots. my longest kill shot is 55yds. :)
Allways wait for the babies to come out.
