Topic: Winchester 555 .22lr = Teh Suck

I was at Walmart the other day and needed to pick up some bulk .22 ammo. I'd just finished off some Federal 550, and decided to try something new. They had Winchester 555 and 333, or at least there was shelf spot for the 333. I'd have preferred to take the smaller quantity, but I haven't heard much bad about the 333/555, including at rimfire central, so I went ahead and grabbed the 555.

What a mistake!

I don't know if I just got a bad lot and the stuff is usually good, but about in 1 in 1-10-15 won''t go off, even with multiple nice, deep firing pin strikes. Dud city!

Should I contact Winchester and complain?

For that matter, what is the proper way to dispose of unfired .22 lr ammo? I don't want to just throw it away, seeing as it is mostly lead by weight and could go off, although the going off part seems almost purely hypothetical

Yes I'd complain to Win/Olin. I had some bad brass a while back and it several months but eventually they made it right.

Sorry to hear that about the Winchester, I hope they make it right. Guess Walmart won't take back ammo...

Just curious - what gun(s) are you shooting it with?

Gun is a Remington 597

I got a 333 pack from Sportsmans Warehouse and my Ruger 10/22 loves it but the Buckmark does not.

Interesting - I'll have to see whether my Buckmark does.

I had some issues with the 333 out of my 10/22. Every other brand I had would fire fine but the winchester sucked. Kind of the same thing about 1 in every 10 would not fire. Dud central. I just quit buying it.

The 555 is an interesting case for me, the first half of the box was having constant ignition issues, I actually got a squib with my Ruger 10/22 but I caught it so no worries. Then the remaining ~250 rounds shot just fine.
I stuck with federal bulk packs ever since that. Plus the federal is cheaper and cleaner I think.

Yeah, I think I'm going back to the Federal bulk after this. Maybe I could give away the 555 as snap caps that occasionally go off

That sounds like a fairly accurate description.

None of my 22's like the winchester stuff, only the federal. In the past I've pulled the bullet and recycled the brass and lead.
