Federal 45 acp now using SPP
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:49:12 AM »
I guess I missed the memo about Federal changing their 45 acp over to small pistol primers.  I was out of reloaded 45 acp the other day, so I just stopped by Walmart and picked up a couple boxes of Federal for $16.  I thought wow that is pretty good price for factory ammo (which I haven't bought in a couple of years).  I shot it up at the range, picked it up, tumbled it and threw in my clean brass bucket.

Went to reload today and noticed that the primer pockets were small on the Federal (after jamming).  This was not NT ammo, just regular Fed Champion. Sorted those cases out into another batch to contemplate.  My question for you more enlightened reloaders is this:  Is there any adjustment to the power charge necessary if I reload these cases?  These are regular brass reloadable (I assume) cases, so I hate to just throw them out.

no change, as long as it's  not berdan primed ( two flash holes inside). Should be G2G

Awhile back,  while at the L.E. range walking all over the stuff others left laying on the asphalt, I noticed Blazer .45 "brass" (Aluminum) in abundance. While sorting out some usable stuff (after sweeping it all up) I noticed some SP and LP mixed together. I never knew they made it both.
I found that rather strange, and until now didn't give it a second thought.  They for whatever reason decided to switch.
(Oh God, I can see it now. Tomorrow there will be lines at Sportsmans Whorehouse with every body hoarding Large Pistol Primers, with everyone whispering to each other "did ya' hear, they ain't gonna' make large pistol primers anymore!"
