advice or input sought..
« on: February 23, 2007, 11:24:34 PM »
 The following ad

I have a Springfiield XD9 9mm that is in great shape. Comes with 4 mags. $425OBO. The Ruger PC9 Carbine rilfe is also in great shape and comes with 3 mags and a weaver style scope mount. It uses Ruger 9mm piston mags. $450OBO. Both firearms are cleaned after each range trip. Buy both for $800.

I'm going to take a look at them on Saturday the 24th.
I was thinking 9mm for the wife for a carry weapon.

Anything I should consider?

Personally, I'd stay away from the Ruger.  Their revolvers are pretty good but I've never liked their semi's.

That I like my XD is no secret.  $450 seems a little steep though.  Mags are about $20 each.  I saw a XD9 compact go for $350 at the last gun show.

Yeah I should have edited out the Ruger part, my wife would give me one of those looks if I bought another 9mm carbine.

The XD is something I've been looking at for 9mm other caliber's also.

She will be the one use it so she would need to be able to handle it.

The XD's are sweet.  Aside from Jeff and pv74's 45 models I've shot a 9mm service model that a friend of mine owns.  It's a sweet pistol...if it were me I'd take into account the 'OBO' on the end of the $425 for the XD.  Maybe offer him $400?

+1 on the Ruger comments.  My GP100 .357 has been great, but I've heard mixed reviews on their carbines.

I looked at the XD9 today. It was in good shape some holster weat but was in good shape. 2 ten round mags and two 16 round mags and a hard case. $415

Quote
LNIB Springfield XD9 Sub-Compact. The sub has a 3 inch barrel and comes with one 16 round mag with spacer and 2 10 round mags with Pierce grip extention. GUn has 150 rounds through it. Price is firm at $425. Cash only please.

He did have a XD9 9mm  Subcompact. It had two 10 rounds with grip extender, a 16 round mag with grip extender. This was in excellent shape he was firm at $425 for it.

I'm going to wait a couple days and see if I can make a lower offer on the subcompact. My wife liked it and could rack it and it fit her hand nicely.

I liked them too.

OK the guy won't come down on the XD  :(

So I'm going to look at what this guy is offering...

This is a like new Ruger P89 9mm pistol in the box with papers. The gun comes with a pachymar grip ($30), the original grip, and a Ruger hi-cap (15rd.) magazine. It is the gray and silver brushed version. All Idaho state laws applied to this sale, $300 firm, no haggleing please. EXCELLENT condition.

Anybody know much about these. What I read is nothing but good things.

I used to have a P95, it was a good reliable pistol, but not as accurate as the CZ 85B that I replaced it with.

I don't like the P-89 and would stay away from them.  Again, I think Ruger makes good revolvers and not so good autos.

Well I looked at it and the condition is 98% it was excellent condition. But passed. The size of the whole thing is large. Much larger than a XD9 I looked at the other day. Plus it is mechanical 'complicated' not for me (I surprised the guy by knowing how to break it down,  read on-line before I went ;) ) But is had a lot more small parts than you see on new weapons.

Of course my wife saw the size and said no, it would take up half her purse and in no way concealable on her.

Thanks for you advice, I'll keep looking....

if you're looking for a small carry piece for your wife, look at Kahr.  the PM9 is just about the smallest 9mm you can get.  it's a little snappy with defense loads but still manageable.

of course if you want to go smaller than 9mm Kel-Tec makes the P3AT and is smaller and lighter than the Kahr. cheaper too.

Yea, wasn't it along the lines of, I brought out my CZ 85, out shot your old p95, horribly, and you had your very own cz85 the next week?  :-)

Sort of, but in reality it was the fact that *I* outshot the p95 using the CZ. Remember? My performance with your CZ was consistently better than my performance with the Ruger.

NGO:  I know of a few guns you might like.  One is a 9mm for CHEAP and the other is a Ruger P345 .45 which is about the only Ruger auto I've heard good things about for $375.  Let me know if you're interested.

JR sent you a message on the 9mm

I'm going to be looking at a Kimber 10mm in SS guy wants 850 with 400 rounds and a set of Lee dies. He is going back to a revolver carry?

Any way I'm also looking for .22 pistols for the kids to have something to carry while on our hikes. Never can have enough fire power when in the woods.

Kimber??? Who had a Kimber a while back... didn't it have issues if I recall...

10mm is quite a handful if you're planning to use it as a carry gun.  There's way too much possibility of over penetration for my liking.

Kimber had issues with their external extractors and has gone back to the standard internal 1911 style.  My Kimber didn't give me any issues but the round count was low on it.  If you had to send it back for service they will replace the slide with a new internal extractor.  Down time is pretty long from what I understand, 3 months or longer IIRC?

CZ's are a great platform.  I had several Tangfolio Witness guns back in my IPSC days and won a bunch of trophys using them.  Personally I can't stand the Rugers, too bulky and clunky for my taste... but to each his own as they say.

I have used .45 alot and 9mm, I like the my .357 colt but Like you said a Ruger  is large to carry.

I used a .40 S&W during a pistol class last fall and really enjoyed shooting it. I been looking at 10 because of the ability to load hot or download it to something closer to a 40. Plus while not a bear gun it would be better than my .357 for back country carry and I could load it hot also. I really don't want to carry another caliber (.44) and have to take care of another caliber. Some what of a compromise I know...

The only downside is the high cost of ammo until I get enough brass to start reloading.
