Egypt is on fire
« on: January 28, 2011, 01:52:14 PM »
Civil unrest, some police turning in their uniforms to join civilians while other police turn against them, the Egyptian Army has been deployed in the cities reportedly in support of the civvies, and the government has essentially turned off the internet all communications there.  This link at Al Jazeera has live streaming video of the conflict.  Best I can tell, the people there were fed up with rising food prices, high unemployment, and government corruption.  Some officials and business leaders have already got on a jet and left the country.  Crazy.

An opinion piece I saw earlier suggested the unrest may sprea throughthe region as many of the nations are in the same position as Egypt and Yemen.  Another suggested this could get real bad asoka of the groups behind the unrest is a Islamic extremest group with alot of popularity among the poor.

If that group did rise to power I see it being another panama situation with the suez canal.

One other article suggested the unrest in the middle east foreshadowed what's next in the us. High unemployment, large government debt with high taxes, raising food and cost of Livin expenses and more. Let's hope not

I love to watch a good revolution.

it's scary to think that our gov has a internet kill switch as well (not officially, but you know they do have it) but when you think about it, flipping that kill switch was paramount to kicking a hornets nest. and I think this back fired on them.

Doctors are being told not to report any gun shot related deaths. those people are pissed, and more determined than ever to throw out their douchbag leaders. police, and military and laying down there arms, and changing sides.

Looks like Mubarak has replaced a number of the leadership already.  He's trying to placate the people but stay in power.  Problem is that the people want him gone too.  Actually, it's amazing to me how quickly this all happened.  I'm sure it's been brewing for a while, but it seems like it has been one week of tremors and one day of explosion.  Boom, government toppled.

Mubarak doesn't see himself as the problem. The want of power blinds them to reality. Look at our own government officials on both sides and at all levels. Really no difference in Egypt and here other than we the people are mostly humane so far. Wait until the welfare checks stop and the kill switch has to be flipped here for our own safety, deep shit boys.

cop and paste comment.

One of the commenters on Al Jazeera made a spot-on observation though: Disabling the Internet in Egypt has backfired big time. Instead of sitting at home, on Facebook or Twitter, people are now out on the streets.

One of the best comments I've heard was yesterday before Mubarak made his statement.  It was either a reporter or political expert who said "What we are seeing here is a government that is afraid of its people, maybe for the first time in 30 years."  Whoda thunk it?

What we should worry about are a couple of things.  First, hopefully this will not spread to other mideast nations, especially since that region is a powderkeg already.  Secondly, if Mubarek goes, it would be a disaster if the Muslim Brotherhood seizes power.  Think oil shipments and the Suez Canal - can you say "high-priced gasoline".

Third, Israel may in danger if the nutcases decide to exploit the situation and invade.  (Although Israel does have nuclear weapons.)

And, of course, hopefully Obama won't do something stupid, given his complete ineptness at foreign policy.
"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission - the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."  ~ Ayn Rand

Egypt now faces food shortages due to the just in time society we all live in. who didn't see that coming?

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2011/01/31/Egypt-unrest-leads-to-food-shortages/UPI-42381296516498/

CAIRO, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Unrest in Egypt has unsettled daily life and created household shortages of food stables such as bread, beans and rice, some Egyptians say.

The street demonstrations have made family members unwilling or unable to shop for food items, CNN reported Monday.

"Everything is running out. I have three children, and I only have enough to feed them for maybe two more days. After that I do not know what we will do," school administrator Gamalat Gadalla said.

The widespread protests of the past week have resulted in sporadic food shipments and irregular hours for grocers. President Hosni Mubarak has also extended the 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew, disrupting normal life even more, CNN said.

"With the curfew, there are no restaurants, food or gas. Basic goods will soon be in shortage," an Egyptian blogger who goes by the moniker Sandmonkey said via Twitter.

You do realize that they already have a "kill switch?" It's called Martial Law. The rest is internet hype...

Here is the difference between civil unrest in Egypt and how it would go down in the US using simple numbers .

The estimated total number of guns held by civilians in Egypt is 1.9 million
The rate of private gun ownership in Egypt is 3.5 firearms per 100 people
The defence forces of Egypt are reported to have 2,682,500 firearms
Police in Egypt are reported to have 455,000 firearms

The estimated total number of guns held by civilians in the United States is 270 million
The rate of private gun ownership in the United States is 88.8 firearms per 100 people
The defence forces of the United States are reported to have 3,054,553 firearms
Police in the United States are reported to have 897,400 firearms

We may have Martial Law here in the US but if we decide the government needs to go we are a heck of a lot better armed than the Egyptians are .

It is interesting though - I think if I was a cop or a troop I wouldn't be laying down my weapon. I'd be taking it right along with me. Stalin said once, "True power comes from the barrel of a gun." And that is true to a degree - but only if it comes with a lot of barrels in a harmonized sequence.

We'll see what happens over there - always interesting to say the least!!
"It is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks.... It doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time I am not against violence in self-defence. I don't call it violence when it's self-defence. I call it intelligence." Malcolm X

I see gas went up another 4 cents today.  That's 6 cents this week.  Our little respite is over.

So do you think it is unrealistic to think this may be us next?  I love America and all it stands for but damn people...sorry off target.  What do you think?
"-I mean I'll kill a man in a fair fight...or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bother's me, or if there's a woman, or I'm gettin paid - mostly when I'm getting paid...but eating people alive?!  Where does that get fun?"

We aren't hungry enough yet.

Egyptians, 40% of them have been living off $2 a day for a whole family..(equivalent)

Many of these smaller countires are not having food delivered to them from "Corporate" supplies...Companies don't want their worthless fiat currency, (they still take our fiat dollars).

So when does it happen to us....when Corporations, (big international and big government owned) start deciding they don't want our dollars either.

This gets back to currency policy and management. As we continue to print money (QE1,2, @a and eventually 3) and things like dumping selling $25 Billion 4-Week Discount Bills every month...all of which is making the dollar more and more worthless...

So get ready, prep, you need enough to live thru a year of coming termoil. When it happens it will happen in hours.
