I believe short range weapons are:Archery,Muzzle loader and shotgun slug or 00 buck

Short Range Weapons
In big game seasons restricted to short-range weapons,
it is unlawful for hunters to use any weapon other than a
muzzleloader, archery equipment, crossbow, a shotgun using
slugs or shot of size #00 buck or larger, or a pistol using
straight-walled cartridges not originally developed for rifles.

Crossbow - I did not know that! That's pretty cool - -

Next year Steph and I are planning on putting in for X tags in the Salmon region which is one of the short range weapon seasons. My brother and his wife scored on a couple of whitetails with muzzleloaders this year. Since this isn't a muzzleloader only season sabots and jacketed bullets are still legal with black powder gear.

There are definitely some nice places for short range shooting of game up there! Hope you get them - - - -

After the way things went this year I'm reasonably sure that our deer hunting success is a foregone conclusion for the forseable future. My pops has several pieces of private land that the entire family has permission to hunt on and unless the neighbors decide to change their policy of no hunting we will continue to harvest the deer that spill off of "Gatung's preserve". My immediate family took 5 bucks out of a single alfalfa field in 8 days and watched 3 more jump the fence headed in to the field as we were leaving with our last buck. I know of at least 3 other bucks that came out of that field to other hunters.  Oh and don't forget the whitetail doe shot by my sister in-law and buck (he'd dropped his antlers already) that my brother shot with the muzzleloader, not in the same field but on a neighboring property. Over the past 3 years our family has taken a dozen deer out of the same general area.

The evening that Steph scored on her buck we saw a total of 17 bucks and more does than I cared to count. Problem is all the nice bucks are on the preserve and know better than to leave during the light of day so we are taking spikes, forkies, and my little 3x3 was the biggest. I'd venture to describe the situation as an infestation of deer. One land owner with some ideal habitat and a no hunting policy is causing serious damage to his neighbors who are trying to make a living off of their land. We are doing our part to be neighborly and help out where we can. ;D

I'd like to help you out Mark but permission was granted to my dad and those he invites. I've broached the subject with him already and he wants to keep it in the family. Sorry bro. Can your boy still shoot a doe legally? That might be an easier sell.

Yes, he's still old enough - he has one more season, I think.  He will be 15 in the Fall.  I understand the family thing, though.  No worries.  I have a gut feelling that this is the year we want to make sure the freezer is full.  We'll get'er done.  :)

Let's see what Oct brings, if you want to drag him all the way to Salmon to shoot a doe I'd be happy to put you within range of one. Got other honey holes. May even be able to find you a buck with some luck.
