45 acp adapter for 454 Casull
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:11:48 PM »
Has anyone seen or pondered using 45acp in a revolver chambered in Casull?
I am thinking of SHTF scenario, or if I end up with a bucket full of 45. ACP falling at my feet. ;D
I would like to use it in my Super  Redhawk, which has a ring machined in each chamber of the cylinder. Presumably for head spacing the cartridge, even though LC spaces off of the rim.
I was thinking of using A-zoom snap caps for LC and cutting the cap down to accommodate the ACP in the chamber, letting the ACP head space off of the rim in the cylinder.
I could take the cap and drill a hole though the center to accommodate a brass firing pin. Perhaps with a tool steel tip. Machine a little out of the side of the firing pin, drill a hole in the side of the cap for a roll pin to capture the firing pin.

I know the Super Redhawk is 1:24 twist, and ACP uses 1:16, and I know you can load LC inexpensively. Also, Moon clips for 45 ACP would leave too great of a jump to the forcing cone.
Any ideas?

there is a couple places that will machine your cylinder to take moon clips so you can use all 454 ,45lc,45acp

It seems to me that if you're worried about some sort of situation where you aren't going to be able to resupply (except for scavenging) that you should just buy common guns in common calibers (i.e. glocks, AR-15s, 1911s, etc) and just stock pile yourself more ammo than you would ever think you would need.  I mean, if you have a G19, a ton of magazines, 10-20k rounds of 9mm and a lot of spare parts/back up guns, are you ever really going to run out?  Don't you think you might die or run out of food before that happens if civilization collapses?  I don't think anyone is really going to burn through that much ammunition (aside from hunting, but I would assume you're using a different firearm for that) without getting in a situation where they're hurt or killed before expending tens of thousands of rounds.

Also I would think in general you'd be better off stock piling a ton of food and a reasonable amount of firearms/ammo/accessories than going to ridiculous levels.

On a lark I hit up http://www.gun-deals.com and found the cheapest brass cased ammo I could find which was shown as ~22 cents a round shipped to my zip code in Boise, if you shelled out 2,220$ you could stack up 10k rounds of 9mm in your closet.

:ot:

Guys, this is an academic question about the viability of using an adapter to shoot 45acp. I already have 9mm, .40 S&W and 45acp chambered semi autos, with plenty of ammo. ;D
I just want to make the gun in question multi functional. Kind of like barrel swaps from .40S&W to 9mm or 357sig.
I know I can take certain rifle shells and cut them down to head space off of the groove in the cylinder, I just want to know if a chamber adapter has been tried for 45 ACP.
My question is if this has been tried before, or has been considered.  ;)

...I am thinking of SHTF scenario...

Sorry if I misinterpreted your post then.

Sorry if I did not express my thoughts clearly enough.
No hard feelings ;D

Upon further reflection, would a steel core inside of a 45 colt cartridge be better to withstand the pressure from the 45 ACP?

the ring in the cylinder is the throat
you could spend time making a spacer with a firing pin built inot it but you will ever now and then get a round that that force from the firing will just drive forward and not set off happens to me when i dont use moon clips in my 625
 :ot:

the jump to the forceing cone shouldnt be a worry it will still shoot but just not as accurate
you could file down a couple 1/3 or full moon clips and it would work way cheaper and simpler

there was a place cutting down super redhawks before ruger made the alaskan and the just modifed the cylinder to take moon clips and it work fine made it a true multi caliber gun
