Black's Creek Area Cleanup – Boise, Idaho
« on: April 02, 2008, 06:51:57 PM »

As many of you know, individuals from Boise Shooters, PWS, Impact Guns, Gem-Tech, Tactical Solutions and others performed a cleanup of a couple local shooting areas in the desert near Boise.

We were planning to start organizing the effort again this year when I was contacted by a representative from the Golden Eagle Audubon Society stating that they were going to be doing a large scale cleanup as part of the Earth Fest activities on April 19th, 2008 and wanted to know if we would like to participate.

Being able to be involved in the cleanup effort while not having to plan and organize it intrigued me very much, so I thought it sounded like a plan.

So – we are gathering volunteers to assist in this cleanup effort.  There are 5 zones in the Black’s Creek Reservoir project area.  We will be in charge of zone 5, which is essentially where we cleaned up last year.  (see attached map).

Volunteers can sign up by going to http://www.idahoearthfest.org/id12.html, or by simply emailing me your name and such I will sign up as a group with all of our names.

The clean up is scheduled for the 19th of April beginning at approximately 10am and will last for 2 to 3 hours.  There will be water, toilets, hand washing stations, etc.  At this time we do not plan on serving any meal, but this could change.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Todd

Any idea of the expected number of volunteers?  Unless they have a shit load expected I don't see how they can clean up much in 2-3 hours.  Last year we were busy most of the day and at Blacks Creek it hardly looked much better when we were done.

Not to be a wise ass.......but doesn't the Ada County community service crew of convicts do this once per year?

They had a 15 foot tall pile of orange bags last time they did it.

Now there is a resource you should look into.  They've already volunteered and don't even know it-YET

I basically made the announcment last night - so other than the 5 of us in the shop - I have no idea how many people will be out there.  As this is a volunteer project and much like last time, there will be many people that say they will come and then not show up.  There will also be people that heard about it at the last minute that end up showing up.  We would like people to work for as long as they wish - but again - as it is a volunteer project, it is heard to say, "we need your ass there 8 hours"  ;D

One thing we will have that we didn't have last year will be rakes.  Those would have been very helpful last year.  BLM is also giving us the big orange trash bags for smaller stuff, so that will be handy.

If anyone that was out there last year thinks of anything else we could use, let me know and I'll see what we can do to get it.

I'll be there Todd.

The shotgunners that frequent that spot have made a frick'in mess out of zone 5 with their shell hulls (pretty sure it's zone 5). As shooters we need to police up after those shooters who don't give a shit......or we will *all* lose in the end.

I've been out a our favorite spot a few times lately hunting bunnies and except for a few spots it's not to bad. Midnight dumpers are junking up the spot where the dirt bikers park.

Agreed - this is what we started noticing last year - which is, the more shit that is on the ground, the more people think it is a public dumping area.

I would like to put our signs, but then people would just shoot them... :(

We can change the name of our portion to "Operation cleanup after assholes that give the rest of us a bad name" if you like?

I'm aware of the intent of the clean up and it's good. I've always taken care of the things I own to make them last and I don't waste. I've been pre-recycling (need a bag sir, no thanks..) for years. I ask sick and tired of seeing all these a@@hats promoting about "Green this," and "Green that" that if I started to puke I wouldn't stop (tell them how you really feel). Over the last 30 years not much has change with the environment (maybe cleaner air and water, no biggie...) except for the demagogues that use anything they can to gain power for themselves using whatever vehicle they can. We have terrorists trying to establish themselves into a state where they can attack western civilization and so dork is worried about a frickin snail. That is why I'm a smart a@@ when it come to eco and earth whatever. I've been a steward for a long time... ;D

Heard a good one from California, seems they asked the good folks to cut back on their gas intake, you know cuz it would be good for th environment.

We'll they, did, enough that the gov't discovered their revenue from fuel tax was going DOWN! So, to solve the problem they just raised the gas tax some more.

Don't know if it's all true or not, but I heard it on the radio and I found it funny  ;D

We seem to have lackluster support for this effort. So here's my take on the whole issue.

There are people out there that don't give a shit, there's nothing we can do about it. And complaining or ignoring the problem (as in not helping) is not going to solve anything. Many of these people are shooters and their actions will facilitate the bad guys in taking away our shooting spots.

For better or worse, good or bad, right or wrong, we are going to have to clean up after those shooters (and midnight dumpers) that will contribute to us losing our shooting spots.

I don't give a shit about people after power or the fact that I did not contribute to the problem. What I care about is removing one more piece of leverage that the bad guys will use to try to chip away at my shooting rights.

I give hundreds of dollars a year to the NRA, GOA and JPFO. And I will help clean up on the 19th. We simply need to do these things to protect our right to shoot. If you’re not willing to help, then don’t fuck’in snivel when you can't own a firearm anymore. Or the only place you can shoot is Impacts indoor range or PR&GC because 'our' desert has been closed off to us.

C'mon you guys, the whole thing seems pretty damned cut and dried; we either protect what we have, even if it’s not convenient to do so or we lose it.

I agree with Spiff. I'm also a member for NRA, DU, etc.. and supporting organizations is great, but sometimes we need to put some action behind it. I have a pickup and I'm in for the 19th.

I had a pretty good time last go-round on this cleanup event.  I rarely get out here in town, so it's nice to meet some local folks in the gun community.

It's not a big deal to give a half day to do a little cleanup, especially if the shooting sports community gets props for it.  Todd, you really should make sure the Statesman and other news sources are notified - it's an interesting angle, one that antigun folks will have to choke on ("Local firearms enthusiasts and manufacturers help out the environment, live at 10 on WTVB...") etc.

Followed by the obligatory b-roll footage of a ragtag group of people with abysmal gun safety skills at the post-cleanup shoot.   ;D

(On that note, perhaps we could all brush up on that concept of "firing LINE" and some Cooper's Rules before the shoot this time?)

:)

Ah yes - the firing line... that last time looked something like a firing squad... we shall certainly have to bring some red tape to mark said line.

Spiff - thanks - very well said.  I was just telling my wife about this very thing.  All these other people know about "shooters" are that they are tobacco chewin', flannel wearin, toilet shooting Neanderthals - which for 99% 80%? of us... isn't true. :)

I'm actually looking forward to the effort - I'm just trying to convince the dumpster people that we need more than 4 dumpsters total.  I was out there today and without looking very far, I know I could fill 2 in zone 5 alone.  They have already "given" us 2 of the dumpsters - but I guess my biggest concern is that we get 100+ people out there to cleanup and simply run out of places to throw garbage.  Perhaps I'm worrying too much and if we can get the big orange trashbags filled and leave them out until the end - if we need more room then we can leave the bags for them to come pick up later...

Whenever I go there, I generally take a garbage can and fill it up before I leave.  Talk about shoveling sand against the tide.  But it helps me feel good about myself, ha ha.

I wasn't able to get out there last year because of work.  This year, I am attending a concealed carry class on the 19th, even though I think the idea of a concealed carry permit is about as ridiculous a concept as there is.  I think it gets out at noon, so I could head out that way then.  There is a lot of crap out there, so I'd think people should still be busy there.

What the hell is wrong with people anyway that they think it's OK to trash the landscape?

They think it's ok because their parents never told them NO, and spanked them for doing something wrong.

Just once I'd like to be around when someone dumps out there, take a few pictures post them on the net with with their license number and all the world to see, and call the sheriff.

And I'd give them a piece of my mind as well.

I AND my family hope to attend. Make sure you bring you wife and kids. Then when you kids grow up they will not be a part of the problem. My kids hate litter bugs and would ever consider doing now that they have done a few clean up projects.

Beside it would make a better picture at 10 O'Clock if it was just a bunch of fat, old, rednecks with guns.

It would be great to have kids and wifes out their having a little fun.

My kids loved the shooting last year.

We went out there yesterday to do some test firing and there is what appears to be the hull of a Geo Metro... I looked around for VIN numbers, but couldn't find any.

Families are certainly welcome.  I believe BLM wants a "consent form" signed for those under 14 - but I'll find out about that for certain.

I've added a poll in an effort to get an accurate headcount for volunteers.  As I have posted this on multiple boards, please only answer one of the polls as to not throw off my very non-scientific numbers.

I would like to remind – or perhaps invite – everyone that can make it to attend the Saturday morning cleanup effort near Black’s Creek Reservoir, East of Boise.

Be sure and bring your work gloves, water, and anything else you might need.  If you have a favorite rake, bring that as well, but there will be rakes on site along with trash bags and such.

We are meeting just off the road near the cleanup area, which is ½ mile West of the Rail Road tracks on Kuna Mora road. (Often referred to as Black’s Creek Road).

Take I-84 East Bound to the Blacks Creek exit.  Turn right on Kuna Mora Road and travel 2 miles – we will be parking on the right hand side of the road.

We hope to see people arriving around 10 – 10:30am so we can get a good stab at this project.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

It will be probably after 1 PM before I get out there, as I understand the concealed weapons class goes until noon.

Looks like nobody will have to worry about getting heat stroke Saturday.
