Feral hogs in Idaho
« on: December 08, 2010, 09:58:27 AM »
I replied to a thread yesterday about this topic, but it seems the whole thread was deleted???  Anyway, I've heard the pigs are in the Bruneau Valley but since it's a pretty large area, does anyone have any insight on where to start looking?  I've emailed fish & game, as I'm sure they would like to be rid of these animals, but I haven't heard back yet.  Is anyone up for a trip up there to start searching??

Yeah, I believe the OP deleted the thread.  Don't forget to reply to your welcome message and tell us a bit about yourself ;)

Thanks for the reminder, Shooter.  I just replied.  So any reason the OP may have deleted the last thread?  Have you heard much about the situation in the Bruneau Valley?

Don't know why in this case, but the original poster can remove their own posts at their discretion.  Personally I don't know about the hogs, but I was intrigued by the discussion.  Maybe some of the others will chime back in here.

Here's what ID F&G had to say about it:

"We have very few wild boars, if any, in Idaho. Any pigs sighted in the wild are most likely feral pigs. They are not an animal that Idaho Fish and Game manages--they are not native to Idaho.

So, those reports were from a year ago - any sightings since?

So does that make them fair game?

I've been out to Bruneau quite a few times but I have never seen any tracks, or talked to any one who has actually seen anything out there.

I talked to a friend of mine who is a Fish and Game Officer and he said they are around CJ Strike Reservoir and there is no season so they can be taken anytime because they are not native and not a game species in Idaho so good luck. He also had a reported sighting in the Reynolds Creek area of the Owyhees.

Any word concerning population size?

He didn't say how many but said that it appears over time down there that a couple different people may have turned them loose and they are still roaming that area. He said he just had one sighting reported at Reynold's Creek.

KTVB ran a story on the pigs tonight.  Bruneu River drainage and CJ Strike WMA.  They estimate 50 pigs - but admit they really aren't sure.  If it's true, they say they have to kill 70% of them every year just to maintain the current population - they can have up to three "litters" a year.

Interesting that 20-30 have already been captured out there.

F&G needs to post a map on their website with hog spotting locations updated daily and give Carte Blanche to Idaho hunters to run them down and kill them . Just hiring a couple Trappers to kill or relocate them isn't going to be enough if we don't want to wind up like Texas or Hawaii .
