Herters ammo
« on: December 02, 2010, 04:47:59 PM »
anyone have a problem with this stuff in 223? i bought 5 boxes on black friday and so far every round has failed to cycle in both my rifles. My hand loads run perfect so i know its not the rifle. I only bought it cause i wanted some cheap plinking ammo and im ocd about picking up brass and didnt wanna deal with that for a few trips.

I haven't used Herter's but I have used Tula, which is also a steel cased poly coated ammo.  I had an FTE using it where the shell stuck in the chamber and the extractor shaved off the rim.  Since then I have made sure that the chamber was scrubbed extra well when cleaning and I haven't had another problem since.  I think in my situation the chamber was dirty from previous use and wedged the case a bit.  I have read never mix brass and steel without cleaning in between to avoid problems.

I did a web search and it looks like the quality of this ammo is...wait for it...HIT AND MISS!

You could mix it in with good ammo in your mags and practice malfunction drills.  Watch for squib loads though.

Like agunforeachhand I have about 200 rounds of Herters/Tula through my AR with no problems. No complaints for the price...

tried to burn up the last two boxes of this crap today. it will not cycle my rifles. i even tried lightening the buffer in my full length to get it to run. I will say though that it is reasonably decent plinking ammo if it worked. was ringing the 500yd gong with it today.

Sounds like it would be fine for a bolt gun.  Varmints?

Just a warning...don't shoot it at any steel unless you plan on buying it and taking it home.

I have to agree, the Herter's and Tula white box works well in my new AR as well as the old one. When they have it on sale under $4, I'll buy it with confidence.
