1911 Centennial Shoot & BBQ- Any interest?
« on: November 16, 2010, 09:44:24 PM »
Ladies and gentleman,

I am considering a match for 2011 in honor of JMB 1911 and it's 100 year anniversary.

I am floating the idea and seeing how many of you would be interested. I do not have a date yet, sometime in 2011, spring or summer quarter probably.

This would be at the Parma Rod and Gun Club and here is the gist of the shoot.

Stages: combination steel challenge, man on man, IDPA, USPSA type stages, 6 to 8 stages total.
Lunch provided
Find a few local vendors to throw in some prizes.

Rules: 1911, single stack only, maybe even .45 only

Winner is the Top 1911 shooter in Idaho!

There is also talk of having a 30-06 long range shoot after lunch or something to celebrate the 105 year of the introduction of that caliber as a fun side match.

So, that's the idea, anyone think this would be fun? beside me?

Thanks
Brian - W1CDP

This sounds like something you could make really big.
I haven't heard of anything like this yet for next year?
You should invite the 1911 manufacturers, and maybe even get some big prizes to handout?

Just a thought, but sounds like your on to something  ;)

Can I run my Para if I download the mags? Seems kinda silly to limit it to single stacks only.

FJ - Not sure on that... I would like to limit it to single stack, 1911 .45 only guns, no optics, 8 round mag limit, maybe even 7 rounds, still fleshing that out.

I don't want to exclude people, but at the same time, I really want to keep it 1911 single stack only. I'll see what kind of feedback I'm feeling.

I'm looking for a date now, I was thinking of kinda keeping this a local Idaho/eastern oregon event, so we'll see how much interest we get and how far it goes.

So plan on something in 2011 to celebrate the 1911!

This is a really good excuse for me to get the 1911 I've been wanting  Sounds like fun, I'm in as long as I can come up with one by then.

What difference does it make as long as mag capacity is kept the same? It's a 1911 in all other respects, or is there some advantage to having a short fat grip frame that I'm not aware of?

Maybe two classes ???

1) 5", 1911 single stacks in .45, with standard magazine lengths.

2) Double stacks and other barrel configurations (covers length and other calibers)

Sounds more reasonable to me. Specially since I've got a 3.5" barrel too. 2 reasons to be excluded ::)

I think what he is trying to do is to commemorate the anniversary by allowing only guns as they were originally made.  If that is the case then it should be no mods like trigger work just your basic from the factory gun.  Or you could have the factory class, then everything else like the double stacks, 9mm, .38 supers, and highly modifieds.

9mm and .38 Super are factory.  So are the Gold Cups.  It would seem much easier to select caliber and capacity as the distinguishing features.

My preference is for a single stack .45 1911A1 type firearm, don't care about the barrell length.

There are plenty of us around that have 1911's and I know I don't mind peoplel shooting mine, just bring some ammo.

I'm not wanting to exclude people, I want to acknowledge JMB classic 1911 design that has stood the test of time, and for the most part, is basically unchanged except for minor items since it's inception. I don't want to start a debate about 1911 vs 2011 vs double stack, etc... and I don't want to have a debate about a defensive vs tactical vs training vs bad training type of shooting competition. I want to have a fun match, that has a lot of 1911's, and maybe even hand out a few cool prizes, eat a few burgers or what not, shoot a 30-06 for dessert and know that I'm hanging out with a bunch of like minded guys and gals in this screwed up politcially too correct world.

So it sounds like you guys would enjoy it, so I'll start asking around the local gunshops (except one) and see what kind of little prizes I can round up, Pops has already said he's in, so I've got a start. I'll find a date that hopefully works with most everyone's schedule and we'll have ourselves some fun with the slab side.

Oh, almost forgot, yeah you can come for just the BBQ, but you'll wish you came with some ammo and/or gun. :-)

I'm in tentatively. Work schedule will dictate so sooner you can get the date out there the better. RG, I'll take you up on the loaner, got plenty of ammo. Got several ought sixes too, are there gonna be limitations on these too? Don't have an M1, but got an old Rem 721 if vintage is a must, or there is the stainless Ruger 77 MkII, or Rem 700 ADL (really the wife's).

You want to see a man card in jeopardy?

I'd have to borrow my wifes 1911, and it's chambered in 9mm...

Edit to add: Now the wife wants to go... I'm doomed.

I thought about that, I think the glock match is like that... you can shoot anything but only the glock shooters place or get prizes? Right? Anyway, we'll see how it flushes out.

As far as the '06, that's a side match in celebration of the cartridge, not the gun... but if we could round up a few M1's and other classic JMB rifles, they would be kinda fun to shoot. I plan on bring out the A-Bolt and getting my FIL's M1 too. Modern vs classic, kinda fun.

I might be able to locate a 1911, so count me in! Good idea Brian!

Actually, your remark about modern vs classic made me laugh.  A 1911 was the first gun I ever purchased  on my own, and this fall to commemorate year 2011... I got a 2011!  But I'll shoot the ol' single stack, even 7+1 if that's how the match is structured.

Let me know if you need help with stages, or the match in general.

Sounds like a great idea, the Mrs. and I would be there. what more could I ask for...a day out with the 1911 and M1!!! And yes, my guns are available for loan too.

My thoughts on this (not that they matter): Two classes for mag size would be a good thing if you don't want to limit to single stack. Also if you get to picky about the guns in general you'll have about 12 people shooting with "real" 1911's. I have a Taurus PT-1911, it's a copy, clone, knockoff (or what ever you want to call it), but it's what I have and I love shooting it. Someday I hope to have a real 1911 in my collection, and I hope it's not a safe queen!

Would be great to have you there.

Full rules are posted on the web site, along with the online registration.

1911 Single stack .45 ACP only, 7 or 8 round mags, don't care what brand, what barrel length, or what color.

Anyway, it's all detailed out. April 16th!

See you there!

i have a ballester molina i thought was a 1911 but ive heard and done some research and i can see some discrepancy. wanted to knw if it w ould qualify as a 1911 for the shoot? its 7 rounds single stack .45 uses 1911 barrel mags and springs but i guess a few internals arent fully interchangeable with most 1911's.

My qualification for it being a 1911, is if it is a 1911 model or copy thereof, 1991 would also be acceptable. The final determination is if it will accept a standard 1911 single stack 45 magazine from any one of the number of manufactures

The orgininal 1911 wasn't even made by one company anyway, it was made by several for the war effort.

WIth the vintage '06... does the gun need to be in orignal configuration?  I have two M1917's - one's a Winchester that my grandfather picked up surplus in the 1940's.  He took off the mil stock and sporterized it and put an old 4x (well, it's old now) Weaver scope on it.  I also have a Remington version of the same rifle - also sporterized, but with peep sites.  These are the only mods - the stocks (and the scope on one). Either of these gonna work?  I'd really love to find one someday with the original hardware still on it.

06 side match is not a vintage match... we will have some vintage M1's there for kicks and giggles, but any rifle, in any configuration chambered in 30-06 is fine.

For the 30-06 part.....

the plan is to bang away at steel gongs at the following distances
165 yards
220 yards
330 yards
440 yards
550 yards
710 yards

Then depending on the who and the what, go to 900 yards and if more is needed 1300 yards.
After 1300 we are out of dirt and most 30-06's are out of gas.

to shoot 900 you have to hit 710.
to shoot 1300 you have to hit 900

any 30-06 is ok
No armour piercing ammo though.
It wrecks the steel and starts a really good brush fire.

I would be down for a 1911 shoot and a 30-06 shoot too!
Need to get my 190A3 out more and this would be a great excuse to buy my 2nd 1911 Since I sold my first a while ago...I got the SIG Sauer bug and it wouldn't let go...but I'm good now

me and sig 1911 and my M1 garand will be there.

Maybe the Nampa Chosin garand match needs a 1911 side match?
