300 fireball bullets
« on: November 12, 2010, 11:44:56 PM »
Trying to price out how mch it would cost to shoot a 300 fb. Brass, powder and primers are pretty cheap. It's the bullets that hang me up. What bullets CANT you use? I see 30 carbine for cheap. Would the work or is it strictly sp style bullets? The build would be mostly supersonic loads an for plinking.

You can use cheap 150gr (or similar) FMJ's.  I decided I wouldn't be plinking much so I got a bunch of 175 and 220 SMK's.  My supersonic loads will mostly be 125gr Nosler BT's and the new 110gr Barnes SBR TSX's.

I shoot these in my .308 for inexpensive trigger time and they work well for me.

So can you shoot round nose bullets in .300 aac/whisper/fireball/whatever name it's going by this week?  These seem pretty cheap for instance, or would it have feeding problems? http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=1941&dir=278|281|293|324|696

I tried hornady 110 hj the other day. They fed alrigt but I was just pulling the trigger so I don't know how accurate they are. Feeding was ok but you gotta get a good crimp, i think for thength there is q bit less in the neck. I had to light of crimp I think cause two fell apart while feeding.

That's good to know, it seems like a pretty cheap way to load supersonic plinking rounds.  I'm thinking of putting together a .300 AAC upper for my AR and it'd be nice to be able to load cheap ammo for practice/fun in addition to more expensive loads.

Anyone have any load data for 145 grains?  These work out to .13 cents each shipped: http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=7239&dir=278|281|727

ive been using h110 and aa no9. for all my loads. using those surplus bullets from wiedners, which say they are 145 but mine where all 150, i could use the min to max loads in my ar and still have it cycle just fine. the sierra manual has them listed under single shot for the contender. here is a pdf i found with the data  http://listmequick.com/300/Sierra300whisper.pdf i built this gun as a plinker, i think i can get the recoil low enough my wife will shoot it then i can get her to shoot a 223

Thanks for the load data!  Anyone know if 145 grains is close enough to 150 grain to use safely if I were to stumble across some bullets that were actually 145 grains?

Anyone experienced problems with their zero when switching between 110 and 220 grain bullets?  Looking at some data online (bullet drop and the difference in velocities) it seems like it would be difficult to have one zero that would work for both of them, especially once you get farther out there in distance.
