What do you carry while hunting?
« on: November 09, 2010, 01:07:08 PM »
I have seen plenty of whats in your BOB threads and EDC stuff but I am wondering what you carry while in the field while deer or elk hunting.
I used to carry my wallet and a knife and gun but that was then.
Nowdays I usually carry the following:
Water - a nalgene or two, food - jerkey, protein bars, Rain poncho, Compass, Too many knives, I can't seem to leave any home. Sharpener and multiplier, 2 flashlight with spare batteries, Paracord and 20 feet of heavier rope, folding saw, matches & fire starting stuff
I would carry a map of the area but I seem to always hunt in places that I am very familiar with.
I carry it all in a Spec-ops "THE Pack" just because that is what I have.  The bag is plenty big for that stuff and I will usually stuff a coat or shirt into it depending on weather.
So what do you carry?

Forgot to add tp, never leave home without it

Having spent one night in the woods unexpectedly when I was a kid I learned that everything in your bag is all you got. That being said, here is my list.

Game cleaning stuff
Knives (minimum 2)
Saw (game type but works for other stuff too)
Hatchet (Gerber medium length)
Mini block and tackle (makes hanging the critter a lot easier for one person)
Gloves (rubber surgical type)
Wipes (post gore clean up)
Trash bag (liver and heart)
Coban (this is the stuff you see used for first aid dressings, makes a good way to attach your tag)

Survival stuff (water, shelter, food, fire)
Magnesium fire stick
Army surplus heat tabs
Strike anywhere water proof matches
TP
Water
High energy light weight foods
North Face down vest (packs into it's own pocket=lot of warm in small package)
Rain poncho
Emergency bivy sack
Wool hat and gloves
Flashlight

Just because stuff
Camera
range rod

All this and I still have room to shed layers if needed.

I pack as light as possible.  We usually end up hiking miles up and down ridges... its very taxing.  Especially with a heavier then needed pack.

- Layers, rain gear, gloves, etc
- Knife
- Food & Water
- Binos
- My CCW
- Some basic tools
- Rifle & Ammo
- Flashlight
- First Aid

My packs always get lighter as the season progresses.  By the end, it's usually...

On my person:
- Tag/license
- Matches & lighter
- iPhone
- Fixed blade knife
- Binos
- Rifle (3 rounds in the belly, 5 rounds on buttstock)

In a lightweight camelbak:
- Water
- Some food & shot bloks
- Wyoming knife
- Compass/map
- GPS
- SPOT (wife requirement)
- Zip ties
- Pocket saw
- More matches/lighters/firestarters
- Lightweight poncho (doubles as a windbreaker)
- LED headlamp
- 20' parachute cord

I don't carry much.. I pack it all on my freaking FatCat..LOL  I am a fat lazy hunter so lot's of snacks and drinks (water and gatorade) knife, TOILET PAPER.  10 rounds for the rifle, and my G21 with 39 rounds of gold dot wolf repellant. a very basic first aid kit and my cell phone so that there is a signal for a couple of days that they might be able to hone in on after my massive heart attack.
