7.62x39 ammo
« on: October 28, 2010, 08:10:17 AM »
So I am thinking about building an AR in 7.62x39.  Ok so I know the disadvantages of shooting .223 Wolf in an AR.  Has anyone had any experience shooting the 7.62x39 Wolf in an AR platform?  Anyone know of any malfunctions and such in the rifle?  I am trying to get an idea of shooting costs versus .223 and if it would even be worth it if they are riddled with problems.

I did some research a while back and the Olympic upper seemed to have good reviews.  There are some out there where the manufacturer does not recommend shooting steel case ammo, which to me seems a little crazy since most of the ammo out there is steel case.
I don't think its going to be much cheaper to shoot, but it will definitely be "different".  I like shooting the 7.62x39 round.  Its a nice balance between the 5.56 and the .308.

At the time of mine getting 20 & 30 mags that worked....
The Wolf and others are a little larger diameter and the chamber was not chromed
for the steel cases. The difference was .308 to .311 which caused heating problems......
Pulled the lacquer off the cases causing the barrel to be rechambered because of build up...
Would do it again but stayed with the standard AR..........by choice.......

Don't own one but I have heArd there are lots of problems with feeding. A mag issue of some sort. Though some manufactures are/have fixed it. I'd you couldnt shoot com bloc surplus I wouldn't see the point. I don't recall seeing mch brass in 762x39. Would be a fun cheap plinker

I built one up several years ago, colt 7.62 upper, the lower is from http://www.ar-47.comNow playing with it suppressed. Any 7.62 ar-15 style mags that feed into the upper will only work with 5-6 rounds, due to the taper of the case, and the straight part of the AR receiver. I fed wolf thru mine, some of the older wolf ammo that was shellacked will gunk up the chamber. I load my own 7.62 loads now, trying to get more accuracy out of a fairly in-accurate round. Much more accurate than I am out to 300 yds, but you will never get it as accurate as a .308 or 5.56. Yes, they are a lot of fun to shoot.
