AR-15 modified to shoot .50 BMG
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:13:02 PM »
Looks like fun ;D http://americanpowerblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/ar-15-modified-to-shoot-50-bmg-round_17.html

HERE’S MORE on that Zel Custom .50 rifle I mentioned Friday. Considering its immense power and impressive size, it’s really pretty easy to shoot. Shouldering it is work, since it weighs something like 35-40 pounds. On the other hand, all that weight smooths out the recoil, too, so the felt kick isn’t so bad — roughly comparable to a 12 gauge shotgun, I’d say. And, of course, it’s not really meant to be fired from the shoulder. Note that it’s actually a bolt-action, with a side-mounted box magazine.

Here’s a full view and a closeup with a .45 ACP next to the rounds for comparison:

Isn't that the same one that blew the guy's thumb off a few months back?

MORE ON THIS LATER, but had fun shooting this afternoon with SayUncle, Les Jones, and some guys from LuckyGunner.com,  an ammo company started by some of my law students. Among other things, I fired an AR-15 modified to shoot a .50 BMG round, from Zel Custom.  Kinda heavy, and almost as tall as Helen, but fun. And I was able to fire it from the shoulder. Perfect for home defense — if you’re defending your home from Terminator robots!

The date on that is 10/15/10 so I doubt it is the same rifle unless it's been refurbed.

I guess they're not the same company, but the design is very very similar.

There were some pictures of the aftermath floating around too, and they were a little bloody.

There are multiple companies that have been making these for years, Bohica Arms, Safety Harbor Firearms, Watsons Firearms etc.. This was gonna be what I was gonna buy a lower for so I could throw together a .50 cal. Always loved AR's and they are cheaper then standard 50's.

The one I've been drooling over for a while is the Ferret.

The Ferret looks cool, I have been checking out the Bohica Arms one for awhile and it starts at $1,295 and add your lower.

I love how people refer to their creations as a "Modified AR-15" when actually its just a lower with a BOLT ACTION receiver mounted on it.  Its like me mounting a Rem700 on an M1 Carbine stock and saying its a "M1 Carbine modified to shoot .300 WinMag!" :S

to be technical the lower is the part that 'is' the ar15.

According to the government, yes.  But in my book the lower is a glorified stock part..  You can't fire a round with a lower, but you can fire a round with an upper (and a claw hammer).. ;)
Take any other rifle and pull the "reciver" out of the stock and it more resembles an AR upper than a lower..
Sorry, didn't mean to thread hijack... :(
