Topic: Do you hunt with an AR? What mags do you use?

I'm not talking about whistle pigs.  Normally I have one 20 round mag in the weapon and one in the pack (2 is 1 and 1 is none thing).  I almost never have 20 rounds loaded up.

I just got in some Lancer L5 10 round mags.  These look great and I plan on using them this year (.223 or .300 Whisper or .458 SOCOM; 6.8SPC I use PRI 10 round mags).

 

So, what do you use and why?

I haven't used mine for hunting yet.  I was told that I could only have a five-round magazine so I got one of those specifically for hunting.  Since then, I have not found any documentation for that restriction.  Doesn't matter a lot, if I can't hit something in five shots I probably should just go home.

I'll be interested to see other responses.  What are you hunting with which caliber if I may ask?

I use an AR to hunt pigs, bunnies and coyotes. I like 20 round mags because they stay out of the way. And lets face it, if you're really hunting your usually not out there blasting away so there's no need to use 30's.

I'll carry at least 2 mags.

I was told that I could only have a five-round magazine...

there is no limit on round capacity for big game/predators/varmints.

the only restriction i know of is for some migratory/waterfowl you can only load 3 rounds.

The forky will eat better anyways.....no matter how long you boil those horns they don't get edible and the broth tastes like crap.

I bought a 5 rounder for hunting. will 10, 20, 30 are great, i don't want the left wing PC assholes to flip out and think im gonna use 30 rounds to take deer, or  lay waste to the wild life of the forest. that said it would be funny to be seen hunting with say a 249 SAW, you know in case bambi mounts a counter attack

 Use a short Mag 20 rounders or less in AR-15, I don't hunt deer with anything
less than .257 dia bullet.

I use 20 round mags as its less to snag to on when moving through the bush.

When I had an AR-15 I used 20 round PMAGs.  It is safe to say that the chance of having a magazine related malfunction is nearly zero percent when using them, they have anti tilt mechanisms (basically, posts) inside them that will prevent the follower from being anything but being 100% level.  They make them for AR-10s as well.

I have hunted with an AR in .308 and .223. I have also hunted with a FAL, and HK91. They all work fine.

Pigs, bunnies, and yotes...have a 30-06 for bigger stuff.  I saw a guy in JV hunting speed goats with one, not sure if legal, but he was a doing it.  I use the 20 round pmags, but always have a 30 rounder available for those damn whistle pigs.
