Big Game?
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:33:27 PM »
So, anyone hitting the hills this year for deer or elk?  I'm taking my boy out again this year - hopefully third time will be a charm for him.  Looking for a good spot to set up camp a couple of days early and then hit the deer opener on the 10th.  Might head back to Thorne Creek Butte again - was skunked there last year due to the early 18" of snow!  Also might just try to find a spot up on the Boise Ridge to set up a camp.  We saw does up there on the last day of the season.  My son could shoot a doe... he tried, but, well... I guess there is such a thing as "doe fever" as well as buck fever. :D  Not sure whether to even bother with elk given the dismal numbers and the wolf problem, although just being "out" is the best part for me.

Mark,
I'd be happy to take you and show your boy a doe to shoot. I'm not too interested in the opening week though, way too many idiots afield. I'll be on annual leave Oct 17th-23rd. Let me know if you want to go on a weekend or whenever.

I find the busier times ("idiots afield") easier, as you can set up somewhere strategic and let all the other hunters push stuff right to you.  I'm one of those idiots, because I can never sit still.

I'm also happy to head out with you; but I'll be busy looking for cows in the early part of the season (and who knows, maybe in the late part, too.)

Wow!  You guys are awesome!

I may have gotten another plan sort of given to me tonight.  I teach a class on Wednesday nights at my Church.  One of the participants invited me to hunt on his 150+acre property which is bordered completely by Ntl Forest land.  According to him, he hasn't seen as many deer in the past several years than what's been on his property this year.  So, I think I may go up this weekend and scope the area out.  He says he only allows a select few onto the property to hunt (he lives there as well and hunts, too)... So... Now this option is open to me.  I think I'd be a fool to pass it up.  But like I said, I need to check it out a bit.

Stay tuned... I still may be taking you guys up on your offer.

Getting ready to head out north of Emmett, been hunting there my entire life.  Rarely go without seeing antlers, and rarely come home without meat.  Was talking to some of the Fish and Game execs and they told me that there are more bucks between Emmett and Cambridge than there has been in 12 years.  Lots and lots of those good tasting forkies.  Can't wait, just gotta get a new back tire on my Fatcat so I don't have to walk my fat butt.  Good luck all!!

I'll be hitting up grouse creek opening weekend I've been watching a few big 4 and 6 points up there. I might check out ditto creek or case creek if I have no luck at grouse.

If something doesn't change soon, it looks like it'll be bloody warm this season.

Wow!  Remembering my sons first deer.... Taught him respect for the animal and thanking the higher power for providing for us.   Exciting times and wonderful memories.

I went out with the smoke pole this last weekend.  Got into some elk.  Called in a nice 5point within 20 feet or so!  Of course...muzzle loaders are A-Tag and cows only.  Had the sights on a cow at about 25 yards but decided that the tree branches hiding the target zone was too much of a risk for wounding so turned down the shot.  Was really great to get out for the first time in 10 years or so!

Best of luck to you and your son!

 Meat in the freezer.
The wife shot a nice pronghorn buck today.....
Started out a little late around 4:00 when she got home this afternoon we
headed out and saw some nice bucks and looked some area which she could
get a clear shot, stopped and asked and they said OK. Mom went to get ready
walked around the side of the house went prone and now meat on the table.
One shot 150 yards with her 270...
Hope all of you have good luck this year.......Nomad.
