Looking for info/recommendations for a conversion kit for an AR.
Anyone have any first or second hand experience with these?
I have seen several "Spikes" models for sale used on AR15.com from $150 to $225, some w/ multiple magazines....

Any advice will be welcomed...

I originally bought a CMMG conversion bolt, then went to Orlando for a conference and stopped by Spikes shop and picked up one of their barrels and conversion collars.  I picked up a Spikes 22lr upper from ARFCOM and put it all together.  Shoots great, I get a FTE once in a while, but that's probably more to do with the ammo than anything.  It'll eat the Wally World federal bulk pack all day long but absolutely hates CCI mini-mags.  Get a Spikes or a Tac-Sol and you won't be dissapointed.  Oh, and get a 50 round drum from Jeff and you'll have a blast!

go with the upper if you can afford it. i have the ccmg conversion and it works well but the accuracy leaves ALOT to be desired. It is also picky as hell about ammo the fed bulk pack it loves but more quality stuff it ftf or jams constantly. i actually had to dremel the extractor give a bit too, it wont extract live rounds very easily. I do like having it. i just feel guilty when i mag dump 223. but with the conversion that guilt disappears. i would also recommend the SS version too the parkarized versions bearing surfaces are pretty rough.

if it matters, ive seen the ccmg one in cabelas a few times and jeff had a few a while back

Yup, go for the upper if you can. I have a Model 1 Sales upper and have great results with it.

Am considering the conversion unit since I want it for a BOB and don't want the xtra weight of an entire upper....

Which one would you suggest.

Thanks

I got a CMMG one and it has been great so far. the only thing it hasnt liked is some cheap russian steel case stuff that is low velocity so it didnt like ejecting it and had one stick in the adapter. there was a special when I got it, the adapter and three of their mags from pallemeto state armory and there mags seem to work just as good as the BDM ones.

I have heard some good things about the CMMG Kit.

If looking at uppers id call PWS as they are local and they could easily answer a few questions about theirs.

I have the parked CMMG with a Spikes chrome collar.  I'd go with a chromed one Spikes or CMMG They're essentially the same except for a couple different things Spikes does with their adapter.  Jeff had some chrome CMMG's a while back.  Might give him a call.  Obviously 22's are very dirty and my chrome collar cleans a lot easier than the rest of the bolt.

The .22 LR likes a 1:16 twist rate and a .223 bore for best accuracy; this makes the dedicated upper best for shooting targets or critters.
If you just want an inexpensive way to make you AR go bang the CMMG conversion kit will work well but expect your groups to look more like a gathering.

I have a CMMG upper that has worked flawlessly so far.  I shoot mostly Federal bulk.  You do need to clean everything more frequently than you might be accustomed to.  Also, it ejects the spent casings with considerable force - to the annoyance of some other folks at the range.  That's a good thing because FTEs are one of the big complaints with these rifles.  I just take that into account and try to get a table at the right end of the range.

If I had to do it over, I would look at the .22 ARs that most of the big-name manufacturers have introduced in the last year.  Some of them can be had for not much more than a dedicated upper.  Just do your research as some brands have had a lot of issues while others have a great reputation.

i just use a Ceiner kit in my Bushmaster-- no issues and dead on accurate. Keep it oiled. The black dog mags are first rate and better than the Ceiner mags that came with the kit. The advantage of this that I can practice with all my optics and add ons without having to go the expense of duplicating them on a dedicated upper. Takes less than 30 seconds to change from .223 to .22LR. Paid for itself very quickly......
