matches in an old pill bottle are my favorite and a lighter. i also like small homemade candles as fire starters. (basically tea candles with bigger wicks). spare knife and wet stone. extra socks (i usually take 2 pair or more a day for camping). a stainless steel water bottle (for heating water). 550cord/rope. FA kit. compass... lots of small stuff could be added.

matches, 2 knifes and a stone and socks and water are MY nesseacties

Weekends in August look good for me.  Most all of my previous trips have been in the Sierra-Nevada so I don't know of any locations to suggest around here.  I'll wait to see what others contribute.

I was told that much of the Hells Canyon wilderness was burned in the 2006 fire.  Was the Black Lake area affected?
