I'm in the market for a gun safe and was wondering if you guys have any recommendations.  I'm looking to spend $1500 or less and hopefully get into a mid-sized safe.  I just want to get the most bang for my $$.  Any brands to avoid?

I've got a Heritage and have had absolutely no complaints.  I did a bit of looking around before my purchase and liked the Heritage the best.  When making your decision compare fire ratings, locking mechanisms and thickness of the doors.  Heritage is an Idaho company and offers a lifetime replacement if your safe is ever broken into.  Check them out at www.Heritagesafe.com.  They are definitely worth looking into before making your decision.

If you choose a Rhino, there is a D&B in Ontario.  Well worth the drive to not have to pay sales tax.

+1 for Heritage. If you happen to have farm bureau insurance you get further $500 discount on safe cost, and premium break. Your insurer may vary. Call them for details.

Just remember, gun safes keep out the less determined(teens, amaturers, folks in a big hurry). They can all be entered rather easily by someone with a little ingenuity or experience. If the metal looks like  big snips will cut it, run away, everything else will serve most of our purposes.

Don't put too much stock in the fire ratings on gun safes. They are not UL listed for a reason! Do a little research on fire rated safes and you will see what a true fire rated safe provides, and sets you back. Think class III  M16 replaced for about the cost of the safe.

Still, not to worry, most safes are a great investment just insure whatever you put in it...

I have a large Champion. I'm happy with it.

my dad has a rhino decent quality good price
you can also get scratch and dent rhino s from that archey place on garrity
also the cabelas outfitter series is similar to the rhino
can get decent deals on them when they do the 75 or 100 off deals

Plan ahead if you can, do you expect to buy more guns? how many other valuables will you use the safe for? it's easy to out grow the size of your safe. I already need a larger one.

I got a big horn from Costco it was the cheapest fire rated safe i could find for the size. It was 600 and is a pretty nice safe works great for my smaller house. My dad has two of the Big horn ones from D&B and they are also nice for the price i think they were in the 850 each range

I have  a Heritage safe that I just bought a few months back.  Go to the grill and safe shop next to the Zamzows off of Chinden and Meridian and you can take a gander at the Heritage safes there in person.

I went with Fort Knox Protector and can't imagine looking back.  Had to shore up the floor though.  Wink

Thanks for the replies.  I have looked at the heritage safes.  They seem like very good safes.  I'll have to go to D&B to take a look at the Rhinos.

I too have a heritage, its a great safe. Heavy and I bolted to the floor. The only thing I don't like is the door only opens 90 degrees, not much light getting past me too see in the safe.  A lighting kit would solve that

+1 Heritage. I did a lot of research as that was a big purchase for me. I like that they are Idaho made and the lifetime warranty. They seem stouter than some of the others, and I like the new bolt system as it grabs the outer edge. Another tip is if you want to pass it down some day, list all your family when you send in the warranty card, then you are all covered for life. I agree though that any safe can be opened eventually, but if you put it in an awkward spot inside the house and bolt the hell out of it, it should deter 90% of the scumbags that might break in.

Gun safes are all UL RSC's (sheet metal boxes), so the order for me is:

<$600 - janitor cabinet
$600 - costco safe
$1500 - amsec BF series (concrete fill between sheet metal instead of drywall)
$much more - graffunder or used jewelry safe

The stuff in-between the costco safes and the amsec BF's are just cosmetics on the same level of security, IMO.  (Perhaps more volume.)
